SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – A three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh from junior center fielder
Michael Douglas wasn't enough to make up a four-run deficit in the opener as the Shippensburg University baseball team fell in both games of Sunday afternoon's doubleheader against Bloomsburg from Fairchild Field.
With the 3-1 series loss, the Raiders (19-16, 6-10 PSAC East) fall to fifth in the division with two series left in the regular season (against West Chester and Mansfield). With Bloomsburg (10-24, 3-13) taking each game by one run on Sunday – by 5-4 and 6-5 margins – SU has now lost six of its 10 divisional losses by just one run.
Douglas went 3-for-4 in the opener with two runs scored and a stolen base. Shippensburg totaled 11 hits in the nightcap, with junior first baseman
Pat Kregeloh and senior catcher
Tyler Shover each going 2-for-3. Kregeloh scored twice while Shover drove in two runs.
Junior righthander
Shawn Patterson gave up zero earned runs on five hits in four innings in the opener before junior
Austin Bartley pitched the final three innings.
The Raiders return to action on Friday with a home doubleheader against the Golden Rams beginning at 1 p.m. from Fairchild Field.
Game 1: Bloomsburg 5, Shippensburg 4
The Huskies got off to a 3-0 lead through the first two innings before the Raiders tacked on a run in the third. Douglas ripped a double down the left-field line, advanced to third on a single from junior third baseman
Cal Hogan and scored on a sacrifice fly from senior rightfielder
Cody Kulp.
Two more Bloomsburg runs in the top of the sixth pushed the BU lead to 5-1 and set up the Raider rally in the seventh. After two quick outs to start the frame, junior
Dan Wimer hit a pinch-hit single through the right side. Freshman shortstop
Mike Marcinko then reached on a throwing error to set up Douglas's bases-clearing home run to left field.
Game 2: Bloomsburg 6, Shippensburg 5
Bloomsburg took advantage of seven hits and two SU errors in the second inning to jump out to a 6-0 lead. Shippensburg cut the deficit in the fifth and sixth, however, beginning with a Shover RBI double to right center and a Wimer RBI single to left in the fourth.
Hogan and Kulp led off the fifth with singles to set up a Kregeloh RBI single to center. A four-pitch walk from senior left fielder
Simon Beloff loaded the bases to set up a Shover RBI single through the right side. Sophomore second baseman
Jimmy Spanos then brought home the final run with an RBI groundout.
Kregeloh led off the seventh with a single through the left side and advanced to second on a Beloff sacrifice bunt. Shover then reached on a hit-by-pitch before an infield fly and a strikeout ended the game.
