SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – In a marquee matchup of the two top teams in the latest NCBWA Atlantic Region poll, the No. 20-ranked Shippensburg University baseball team rode a strong pitching performance from senior
Tom Bush and timely hitting on Saturday afternoon to earn an 8-0 nightcap victory that salvaged a PSAC crossover doubleheader split against No. 26 Slippery Rock from Fairchild Field. The Rock won the opener, 9-0.
Ranked atop the latest regional poll, the Raiders (8-2) struggled in Game 1 as the offense was limited to just three hits against Slippery Rock's (8-1) Lou Trivino – the reigning PSAC West Pitcher of the Week who has now given up four total hits in three complete-game victories this season – but bounced back in Game 2 to deal the Rock its first loss of the season.
Bush gave up just four hits in six innings while striking out four to improve his record to 3-0 and match his win total from last season through just four starts in 2013. Freshman
Marcus Shippey retired the side in the seventh, fanning one to finish off the victory.
Junior
Pat Kregeloh earned the loss in Game 1. Sophomore
Nick Massetti pitched one and one-third innings of relief and freshmen
Kyle McClintock and
DJ Kinna each threw an inning. Kinna struck out two in the seventh in his collegiate debut.
Senior left fielder
Simon Beloff drove in three runs in Game 2, highlighted by a two-run home run to right center field in a three-run third inning for his first round-tripper of the season. Kregeloh added a two-RBI double as part of the Raiders' three-run opening inning.
The two teams will play a single, nine-inning game tomorrow at noon from Fairchild Field.
Game 1: Slippery Rock 9, Shippensburg 0
The Rock provided more than enough support for its ace in the top of the first inning, exploding for seven runs on five hits – including three different two-run singles. Trivino – coming off a no-hitter thrown against Bloomsburg last Saturday – retired the side in three of the first four innings while his offense added two additional runs in the fourth and fifth innings on a sacrifice fly and an RBI single, respectively.
Senior right fielder
Cody Kulp, junior first baseman
Dan Wimer and senior catcher
Tyler Shover were the only Raiders to muster hits – all singles – off Trivino.
Game 2: Shippensburg 8, Slippery Rock 0
Bush allowed just one base runner in the first three innings while the Raiders grew their lead in each frame, with three runs in the first, another in the second and three more in the third.
Freshman shortstop
Mike Marcinko and sophomore second baseman
Jimmy Spanos led off the bottom of the first inning with a single to left field and a full-count walk, respectively, before scoring on Kregeloh's double to right center field. Beloff then brought Kregeloh home with a single through the right side.
Junior third baseman
Cal Hogan singled to begin the second frame, advanced to third on back-to-back groundouts and scored on a Marcinko single through the left side for a 4-0 Raiders lead.
Beloff's home run in the third inning came in the third at-bat and scored Kregeloh, who reached base on a walk. Kulp then followed with a walk of his own and eventually scored off of two separate errors from the Rock shortstop.
Shippensburg added its eighth and final run in the fifth inning when Beloff led off with a walk and eventually scored on a Wimer double to left field.
