SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – A grand slam from senior left fielder
Simon Beloff highlighted a seven-run second inning in Sunday afternoon's opener as the No. 16-ranked Shippensburg University baseball team went on to sweep a doubleheader (9-6 and 8-6) over Northeast-10 opponent Le Moyne that gave the Raiders a 3-1 weekend series victory over the Dolphins from Fairchild Field.
After grabbing a 9-0 lead after two innings in Game 1, the Raiders (12-3) held on late for a 9-6 victory. Junior
Shawn Patterson gave up just two hits and zero runs in five innings of work while striking out five for his third win of the season.
Le Moyne (6-10) tied Game 2 at 6-6 with two runs in the top of the fifth inning, but SU responded with two runs on – a sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly – in the bottom of the sixth for the eventual 8-6 decision.
Freshman
Marcus Shippey closed out both wins and earned his first career save in the nightcap after giving up two lead-off singles before retiring the next three batters. The final two outs came on clutch strikeouts with both base runners in scoring position.
Sophomore
Nick Massetti made his first career start on the mound in Game 2 and left the game after four innings with the lead. He gave up eight hits and two earned runs while fanning three. Freshman
Kyle McClintock retired the side in the sixth and earned his first career victory.
Beloff's grand slam was the first of his career and his second home run of the season as the senior batted 3-for-6 with five RBIs on the day. Senior catcher
Tyler Shover went 3-for-7 with four RBIs.
The Raiders will travel to Catawba for a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday before opening PSAC East play next weekend vs. East Stroudsburg. SU will play two at ESU on Friday at 1 p.m. before hosting the Warriors the next day at the same time from Fairchild Field.
Game 1: Shippensburg 9, Le Moyne 6
A Shover triple to right-center in the bottom of the first inning plated junior center fielder
Michael Douglas to open up the scoring. Junior first baseman
Pat Kregeloh then brought Shover home with a sacrifice fly to left for a 2-0 SU lead.
Shippensburg opened the game up in the next frame, with six of the seven runs coming with two outs. Senior right fielder
Cody Kulp doubled down the left-field line and scored on a single to center field from junior designated hitter
Dan Wimer.
After a fly out to left, the Raiders tallied three consecutive singles, with the latter two driving in runs and coming off the bats of Douglas and Shover. Kregeloh then walked to load the bases and set the stage for Beloff's full-count blast to right for a 9-0 Raider lead.
Patterson retired the side in each of the first two innings on 17 total pitches. He left a base runner stranded in each of the next three innings – including the latter two with the Dolphin in scoring position – before exiting the game after the fifth.
Le Moyne rallied in the final two innings off of four SU freshman relievers and tacked on three runs in both the sixth and seventh innings. After giving up an RBI single to the first batter he faced in the seventh, Shippey induced back-to-back fly outs to end the game.
Game 2: Shippensburg 8, Le Moyne 6
Le Moyne scored twice to start the game, but Shippensburg answered right back in the bottom half of the inning with a Shover RBI single up the middle, a Kregeloh sacrifice fly to left and a Kulp RBI groundout for a 3-2 Raiders lead after one.
SU pushed the lead to 5-2 in the second when a throwing error from the Dolphin shortstop allowed junior third baseman
Cal Hogan to come home and a Douglas sacrifice fly to center scored freshman shortstop
Mike Marcinko.
Le Moyne homered to lead off both the third and fourth innings, with both Dolphin runs sandwiching a Raider run in the bottom of the third off a Beloff RBI-double down the right-field line.
The Dolphins' two runs in the top of the fifth knotted the game and set up SU's game-winning runs in the bottom of the sixth. Sophomore second baseman
Jimmy Spanos led off with a double to left-center, and Hogan attempted a bunt to move Spanos over to third. The Dolphin pitcher fielded the bunt on the left side of the infield and went to third, however, but his throw was errant and allowed Spanos to score and Hogan to advance to second.
A wild pitch allowed Hogan to advance to third and with one out, Douglas drew a walk. Shover then sent a fly ball to right deep enough to score Hogan for the final run of the weekend.
