SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – After a 10-inning, one-run loss in the opener of Friday afternoon's doubleheader, the Shippensburg University baseball team responded in a big way in the nightcap, winning 11-5 to force a doubleheader split against Northeast-10 opponent Le Moyne from Fairchild Field.
The Raiders (10-3) dropped Game 1 by a 2-1 margin after grabbing a 1-0 run lead in the bottom of the first and holding it until there were two outs in the top of the seventh, when Le Moyne (6-8) plated the tying run to send the game into extras before winning the game with another run in the top of the 10th.
Backed by junior starting pitcher and slugger
Pat Kregeloh in Game 2, Shippensburg answered back with an 11-3 lead after three innings, as Kregeloh drove in a game-high four runs – to go along with another RBI in Game 1 – and earned the victory on the mound to push his record to 3-2 this season. He now leads the team with 15 RBIs this season.
Senior
Tom Bush was nearly spotless on the hill in the opener, falling one out short of a complete-game shutout before he gave up the game-tying single with two down in the seventh. Bush retired the side in three of the first six innings and finished his day giving up just four hits and striking out seven.
Senior right fielder
Cody Kulp and sophomore second baseman
Jimmy Spanos each hit two-run singles in Game 2 while freshman shortstop
Mike Marcinko and junior center fielder
Michael Douglas each had two hits, an RBI and a stolen base batting back-to-back at the top of the lineup.
Tomorrow's doubleheader from Fairchild Field previously scheduled for noon has been moved back to a 1 p.m. start, weather permitting.
Game 1: Le Moyne 2, Shippensburg 1 (10 innings)
SU loaded the bases with its first three batters of the game, as Marcinko and Douglas led off with singles and senior catcher
Tyler Shover drew a four-pitch walk. Kregeloh then scored Marcinko with a sacrifice fly to right. The Dolphins ended the threat, however, with back-to-back strikeouts.
The lone run appeared to be enough for the majority of the game, as Bush kept the Le Moyne hitters at bay with three hits and zero runs through the first six innings. Le Moyne managed a runner in scoring position in the seventh after a hit-by-pitch started the inning with the pinch runner then stealing second. With two outs, designated hitter Matthew Ciraco tied the game with a single to left.
Freshman
Marcus Shippey then entered in relief and notched the third out with a swinging strikeout. Shippey pitched the eighth and ninth innings as well and did his job in relief – giving up a leadoff single and a walk in the eighth before retiring the next five batters.
With SU junior
Austin Bartley in to pitch the 10th inning, Le Moyne led off with a single with the base runner advancing to second on a subsequent sacrifice bunt. Dolphin center fielder Pat Wiese then doubled down the right-field line for the game-winning RBI.
Game 2: Shippensburg 11, Le Moyne 5
After two Le Moyne runs in the top of the first, Shippensburg answered right back with four runs in the bottom half of the frame. A Douglas single and a Shover walk set up a two-run Kregeloh double to left-center field.
Four batters later and with the bases loaded – Kregeloh at third, junior first baseman
Dan Wimer (hit by pitch) at second and junior third baseman
Cal Hogan (walk) at first – Spanos rebounded from a difficult outing in Game 1 with a two-run single to right center field.
A Dolphin run in the top of the third made the score 4-3 in SU's favor before the Raiders erupted for seven more runs in the bottom half of the inning. With Wimer and Hogan in scoring position with singles, Kulp drove home both base runners with a single down the left field line.
Marcinko scored Spanos (fielder's choice, stolen base) from second on a double down the left-field line while a Douglas infield single plated sophomore left fielder
Bobby Atwell (single to right). With Shover at the dish, a throwing error from Le Moyne's defensive replacement at third base scored Marcinko before Kregeloh ripped a two-run single up the middle that brought home Douglas and Shover.
The Dolphins added a run in the fourth and fifth innings before Kregeloh retired the side in the sixth inning to finish his day on the mound. Freshman
Thomas Swartz then retired the side in the seventh to finish off the SU victory in his collegiate debut.
