SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's volleyball team ripped a season-high 13 service aces and swung .313 from the floor to produce a convincing straight-set victory over PSAC Eastern Division opponent Kutztown by set scores of 25-17, 25-8 and 25-14.
Shippensburg (24-7, 16-3 PSAC), fresh off a Tuesday night performance that included its best hitting percentage versus a PSAC East opponent this season (.301 versus Millersville), improved Friday night by swatting 37 kills and just 11 errors on 83 attempts. Seven different Raiders had at least one kill.
The Raiders trailed just once in the entire match (10-9 in the third set) and used large runs to take control of each set. In the first frame, SU took a 6-1 lead after four consecutive points on the serve of freshman
Abby Mummert that included two aces, and later led 14-3 after a 5-0 run on senior
Jill Edwards's serve (that also included two aces).
Shippensburg scored the first five points of the second set on the serve of freshman
Maria Peluso and eventually built a 13-2 advantage after scoring seven straight points on Mummert's serve – with the second run featuring four kills by
Jill Edwards. The Raiders swung a remarkable .625 in the second set, crushing 16 kills on just one error.
Edwards moved into second place on the PSAC's all-time kills list (1,949) after producing a match-high 13 Friday night on just two errors, resulting in a .407 hitting percentage. Edwards also served up a single-match career high of five aces and did not commit a service error.
Sophomore
Taylor Gottshall slammed 10 kills without an error for an impressive .667 percentage and also led all players with four block assists. Gottshall's attack percentage is her single-match best for a minimum of 15 attempts.
Freshman
Maura Nolan was all over the court once again, dishing out 35 assists and teaming up for three block assists. Mummert and Peluso each served three aces while
Annie Goerl came off the bench with five kills. Peluso also had 12 digs. Freshman
Gabbie Holt finished one short of her career high with 14 digs.
Shippensburg hosts ESU at 1 p.m. Saturday and Shepherd at 5 p.m. The Raiders will honor seniors
Jill Edwards and
Samantha Edwards before the 5 p.m. match against the Rams.
