Freshman
Shaun Smith recorded the fastest time among the scored competitors in the 100-yard butterfly on Saturday afternoon to highlight the Shippensburg University men's swimming team's season-opening tri-meet this weekend against host Southern Connecticut State and West Chester.
Both the host Owls and the Golden Rams factored diving results into their team scoring, resulting in SU's 259-91 losing margin to SCSU and 265-87 losing margin to PSAC rival WCU.
"On a scale of 1-10, we were about a 7 this weekend," head coach
Tim Verge '89 said. "A lot of people are ahead of where they were last year at this time, and it was a good barometer to get out and race."
Smith recorded a 56.22 while senior
Joey Borgioni was second among the scored competitors with a time of 57.92.
Freshman
Elijah Goldman and junior
Brennan Wolter finished 5th and 6th, respectively, in the 1650-yard freestyle on Saturday as both swimmers achieved SU's lone PSAC qualifying times of the weekend (17:33.36 and 17:36.49, respectively).
Sophomore
Jake Dunnigan finished third on Saturday among the scored competitors in the 200-yard IM with a 2:08.00.
