Volleyball Runs Winning Streak to Eleven After Defeating UPJ in Four Sets

SU adds further distance from second-place UPJ and third-place Lock Haven, who lost on Friday night

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. — The Shippensburg University volleyball team persevered Friday evening in a battle of the Top-2 teams in the PSAC Eastern Division, earning a 3-1 victory over Pittsburgh-Johnstown inside Heiges Field House by set scores of 25-17, 19-25, 25-17, 25-20.

Shippensburg (19-6, 11-3 PSAC) extended its winning streak to 11 consecutive matches, its longest run of consecutive victories under head coach Leanne Piscotty, by hitting an efficient .244 and producing 10 aces. Three players ripped double-digit kills for the Raiders, including a match-high 17 by senior Jill Edwards. Edwards also had 10 digs, three aces and two block assists for her 57th career double-double.

Sophomore Faith Athey slugged a season-high 13 kills on just one error, hitting .522, and led all Raiders with four block assists. In three home matches against PSAC East opponents this season, Athey has totaled 31 kills on just two attack errors, swinging .604 in three victories.

Freshman Gabbie Holt contributed to many memorable points in Friday's match and also tallied 13 kills. Holt had just three attack errors, swinging .345, in addition to six digs and two aces.

Freshman Maria Peluso and sophomore Taylor Gottshall each slammed eight kills, with Peluso notching 16 digs and serving three aces.

Freshman Maura Nolan dished out 50 assists for the fourth time this season and also posted nine digs and two service aces. Sophomore libero Laura Plank had 17 digs. 

UPJ (17-7, 9-5) hit .286 through the first two sets but struggled down the stretch, swinging just .037 in the third set. Marissa Erminio led the Mountain Cats with 15 kills and 17 digs, while Kelsey Shanabrook also tallied double digits with 10 kills.

Shippensburg returns to action Saturday at 1 p.m. vs. Lock Haven. The team will be holding its "Dig Pink" fund-raiser, and additional information about the event can be accessed here.
