SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University volleyball team remained unbeaten in October with a convincing Tuesday night non-conference victory over CIAA North front-runner Chowan by set scores of 25-13, 25-11 and 25-12.
Shippensburg (14-6) has now won six consecutive matches overall and eight straight inside Heiges Field House dating back to an Oct. 13, 2012 victory over the Hawks. SU has now defeated Chowan in each of the last three seasons.
Senior
Jill Edwards paced all players with 12 kills, helping her reach the 1,800 mark for her career. Her total ranks 13th in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) history and leaves her 40 kills shy of the league's Top 10. Within striking distance is Lock Haven's Gao Xuan (1,809; 2009-12) and Cal's Dingding Lu (1,807; 2000-03).
The Raiders swung .333 as a team and received contributions from a variety of players on the attack. Sophomore
Faith Athey added seven more kills to her total, while freshmen
Gabbie Holt and
Abby Mummert registered five kills each. Holt did not have an attack error and also added six digs.
Freshman
Maura Nolan continues to excel at the setter position. Nolan tallied 28 assists, served up four aces, racked up eight digs and snuck in two kills. Five players had at least one assist Tuesday, including three for freshman libero
Maria Peluso. Freshman
Annie Goerl served up a match-high four aces.
Chowan (12-4) posted a negative hitting percentage for the match, totaling 21 errors to just 20 kills.
Shippensburg will travel to UPJ this weekend for a total of four PSAC crossover matches with Western Division opponents. SU goes up against Mercyhurst and Gannon on Friday before facing Edinboro and Slippery Rock on Saturday.
