SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team used a two-run single from junior
Simon Beloff and a sacrifice fly from junior
Tyler Shover in the sixth inning of Saturday afternoon's second game to record a 3-1 victory in the nightcap of a PSAC Eastern Division doubleheader with Kutztown from Fairchild Field. KU won the first game of the day, 7-5.
Shippensburg (13-10, 1-3 PSAC East) rode a strong start in the second game from junior
Tom Bush, who allowed just three hits and one earned run in six innings of work for his second victory of the season. Bush ended his day with a crucial strikeout of Todd Rubendall in the sixth inning on a full-count pitch with the bases loaded.
Junior
Tyler Basso made just his third relief appearance of the season but picked up his first career save with a scoreless seventh inning – securing the win by getting two-time PSAC East Player of the Year Shayne Houck to hit into a fielder's choice with the bases loaded.
Kutztown (13-4, 3-1 PSAC East) played five runs with two outs in the sixth inning of Saturday's opening game en route to its 7-5 win. SU had the bases loaded with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning but could not get the decisive hit.
Freshman second baseman
Jimmy Spanos had multiple hits in both games, finishing the doubleheader 4-for-6 at the plate with a walk and two runs scored.
SU will host IUP at 1 p.m. Tuesday in a doubleheader from Fairchild Field.
Game 1: Kutztown 7, Shippensburg 5
Both teams scored two runs in the opening inning. KU got an RBI-single from Corey Buletza and a sacrifice fly from Travis Kreitz while SU sophomore
Kyle Hollingsworth hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the frame.
The Raiders took a 4-2 lead in the fourth with a two-run double by Spanos that was prefaced by a single from sophomore
Pat Kregeloh and a walk by senior
Eric Herman.
The Golden Bears answered in the sixth with their decisive two-out rally. Senior starting pitcher
Jimmy Miller was chased after consecutive RBI-singles by Brandon Shurr and Cody Montz. Senior
Kody Kibler entered and yielded an RBI-single to Buletza and a twi-run double to Houck.
Miller pitched 5.2 innings, allowing six hits and six earned runs while striking out three. Kibler was tagged for an earned run in 1.1 innings of work.
The SU seventh began with a single by Herman and a walk by Spanos. KU replaced reliever Connor Wing with Tom Neely, who got Hollingsworth to hit into a fielder's choice. An error by the second baseman on the play, however, plated Herman and put Hollingsworth on second base. After a balk, walk, strikeout and hit batsman, SU had the bases loaded with two outs. Junior pinch hitter
Steve Sulcoski flew out to right field to end the game.
Game 2: Shippensburg 3, Kutztown 1
The teams combined for just one run through the first five innings of the game – with Kutztown using a leadoff hit batsman in the fifth and a sacrifice bunt to preface a one-out RBI-single by Andrew Otterberg.
The Golden Bears nearly scored again in the sixth, as Montz led off with a single, moved to second on a one-out intentional walk to Houck and then snuck to third base between pitches during the next at-bat. However, a squeeze attempt by the cleanup hitter was fielded cleanly by Bush, and a successful block and tag by Shover eliminated Montz at home. Bush walked the next batter before his critical strikeout of Rubendall.
In the bottom of the sixth, Spanos singled off the pitcher's out-stretched hand and Hollingsworth laced a 1-2 pitch into right field for a clean single. Junior right fielder
Cody Kulp took two quick strikes in his at-bat but worked the count and was eventually plunked on the shoulder to load the bases. This set the table for Beloff's two-run single through the right side and Shover's deep fly to center field that plated Kulp.
Basso retired the first two batters in the seventh before yielding a walk, single and hitting Brett Hauck. He then used an off-speed pitch and a well-located fastball to get ahead of Houck 0-2 before ultimately inducing the grounder to third base that Kregeloh fielded and stepped on the bag to end the game.
