SALEM, Va. – The Shippensburg University softball team dropped a pair of games on Friday afternoon from Salem, Va. on the opening day of the annual West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament from James Moyer Sports Complex. The Raiders fell 4-3 to Charleston before dropping a 4-0 decision to West Virginia State.

Freshman first baseman Maddie Justice went 4-for-7 on the day, including a 3-for-4 performance and an RBI vs. Charleston. Sophomore second baseman Rachel Shumway smacked her first career home run, a two-run blast against the Golden Eagles.

Justice, freshman center fielder Tyler Thompson, freshman shortstop Taylor Weisman and sophomore left fielder Hilary Lyons each had a hit against West Virginia State pitcher Kelsey Lorraine, who allowed four hits, no walks and no runs in a complete game effort.

Shippensburg (5-11) will play three more tournament games on Saturday, beginning with a 1 p.m. game against Shepherd, followed by a recently-added 3 p.m. contest with Davis & Elkins and a 5 p.m. matchup against Glenville State.

Charleston 4, Shippensburg 3

The Raiders and Golden Eagles combined for just four hits through the first five scoreless innings of the game. Finally, SU opened up the scoring in the top half of the sixth after Justice singled to right center with one out. Shumway followed with her home run to left center field that also plated Justice's pinch runner, freshman Jess Harding.

Charleston answered right back in the bottom half of the inning by finally getting to SU sophomore Emily Estep, who had allowed just two hits through the first five innings.

Estep walked the first two batters before Charleston's Aspen Echelmeier hit a go-ahead three-run home run to left center in the next at-bat. The Golden Eagles' Ayla Santos then hit a solo home run to left field, ending Estep's afternoon with four earned runs and nine strikeouts.

Freshman right-hander Makenzie Lynn earned the final three outs of the inning with a strikeout and two groundouts.

Shippensburg staged a brief rally in the top of the seventh. Junior right fielder Kiersten Darhower singled down the left field line and senior catcher Meg Lehman took first after being hit by a pitch. Lehman's pinch runner, senior Rochelle Troise, then scored on a Justice double to left center.

West Virginia State 4, Shippensburg 0

Senior Chelsea Kendall earned the start in the circle for the Raiders but lasted just four outs into the game after giving up four hits and one earned run while striking out one.

Freshman Liz Parkins followed with four innings of relief, and gave up just one hit through the fifth inning. She finished the day giving up three hits and two earned runs to go along with three strikeouts.

Senior Emily Parkins earned the final two outs of the sixth inning and struck out one while allowing one hit.

The Raiders left a runner on base in each of the final three innings, including a stranded Lyons on second base in the top half of the sixth after doubling to center field to lead off the frame.
