SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Senior
Craig Van Scyoc scored a career-high 24 points on Saturday afternoon as the Shippensburg University men's basketball team defeated Mansfield, 90-78, from Heiges Field House, avenging a heartbreaking road loss to the Mounties three weeks ago.
For the first time since starting PSAC East play, Shippensburg (8-14, 5-11 PSAC) had two 20-point scorers in a game, as freshman
Reggie Charles went 8-of-12 from the free-throw line to finish with 20 points and team highs of seven assists and three steals. Van Scyoc tied his career high with five makes from three-point range (out of seven attempts) to go along with six rebounds.
The Raiders tied a season-high by making 56.3 percent (9-of-16) from three-point range, while shooting 54.5 percent overall – the 13th time this season that they have shot 50 percent or better in a game.
Sophomore
Dylan Edgar – who tied his career-high with 21 points in SU's previous matchup with Mansfield (7-13, 4-12 PSAC) – again often found the bottom of the net against the Mounties, as he made 8-of-11 from the field to finish with 18 points and six rebounds.
Senior
Jordan Stasyszyn contributed 13 points and five assists while senior
Will Royal pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with five points and a career-high five assists.
Senior
Dane Lauber played 25 minutes off the bench and finished with six points, four rebounds and two assists.
The Raiders took advantage of early foul trouble for Mansfield in the first half. Down 9-7 at the 16:37 mark, SU broke out on a 20-2 run to grab a commanding 27-11 lead with 10:09 remaining in the half. The Mounties followed with an 8-0 run, however, to cut the deficit in half.
Shippensburg would not let its lead fall below eight for the next five minutes, but a three-pointer from Mansfield's Charles Becoats at the 2:29 mark and another from Cory Henneghan – his fifth of the half – with 44 seconds left pulled Mansfield to within two, down 36-34.
A pair of Van Scyoc free throws and a Charles three-pointer at the buzzer gave SU some breathing room going into halftime, up seven, 41-34.
Just over six minutes into the second half, Mansfield again closed the deficit to two after another Henneghan three-pointer. SU answered with a Stasyszyn three on its next possession, and would eventually grow its lead back up to seven, up 59-52 with 11:04 left.
Up three just over a minute later, Shippensburg began a 17-6 run – finished off by Van Scyoc's final three-pointer at the 5:58 mark – to open up a 14-point lead, 78-64.
SU led by as many as 16 points in the final five minutes and did not allow Mansfield to get closer than eight.
Shippensburg will travel Wednesday to Bloomsburg for an 8 p.m. tipoff against the Huskies.
Notes: In two games against Mansfield this season, Edgar has gone 18-of-23 from the floor and scored 39 points while adding 18 rebounds…Charles's 20 points were just two short of his career high (22 against Central Penn on Nov. 22)…Van Scyoc's 24-point effort was just two shy of tying Stasyszyn's SU season-high total of 26 points (against Central Penn on Nov. 22)…90 points is the most Shippensburg has scored against a PSAC opponent this season.
