ABERDEEN, Md. – The Shippensburg University baseball team swept a Saturday afternoon doubleheader over PSAC West foe Slippery Rock from a cold and windy Ripken Baseball Complex in Aberdeen, Md. The Raiders earned a 1-0 victory in Game 1 before taking Game 2 by a score of 3-2.
Senior
Nick Umberger threw a three-hit shutout with six strikeouts to earn the victory in the opener and improve his record to 3-0 on the season. Senior center fielder
Eric Herman scored the game's lone run on a passed ball in the first inning.
After Umberger took down the side in the top of the first, Herman led Shippensburg (5-3) off with a bunt single. Herman then advanced to second on a groundout from freshman second baseman
Jimmy Spanos.
A single by junior
Cody Kulp allowed Herman to advance to third. Three batters later, with junior left fielder
Simon Beloff at the plate, a pitch from Rock (2-4) hurler Lou Trivino snuck by the catcher, allowing Herman to score from third.
The Raiders avoided trouble in the top of the fifth inning, when Slippery Rock's Ben Bechtol led off with a double and attempted to stretch the hit into a triple. Senior shortstop
Ben Miller was the cutoff man for Kulp's throw from right field, as Miller relayed the throw to junior
Tyler Basso who tagged Bechtol out at third.
Shippensburg used a three-run sixth inning to earn the comeback victory in Game 2, with redshirt-senior pitcher
Kody Kibler earning his first victory of the season. Kibler gave up one hit and fanned three over 2.1 innings.
Sophomore
Shawn Patterson earned the start for SU, allowing four hits and two earned runs over four innings of work.
Down 2-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth, Kulp led off with a single before advancing to third on a Beloff double. Sophomore first baseman
Pat Kregeloh knocked in Kulp with a single in the next at-bat. Basso then squeezed home a run with a bunt, plating junior pinch runner
David McKolosky. Basso and Kregeloh each moved up one base on a throwing error from SRU's pitcher.
Junior catcher
Steve Sulcoski drove home what proved to be the winning run with a sacrifice fly to left that sent Kregeloh home.
Shippensburg will host Slippery Rock tomorrow at noon in a doubleheader at Fairchild Field.
