SALISBURY, N.C. – The Shippensburg University baseball team went toe-to-toe with No. 30 Catawba on a frigid Sunday afternoon from Newman Park but came up just short, as the Indians used a walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth to record a 2-1 victory over the Raiders.

Shippensburg (1-2) managed just four hits against Catawba's John Tuttle and Ross Whitley but kept the game close due to the efforts on the mound of sophomore Shawn Patterson and junior Josh Scott.

Patterson did not give up a hit in the first three innings but allowed five walks in his four-plus innings of work. He finished the day allowing a run on four hits with one strikeout.

Scott entered the game with runners on second and third base and nobody out in the fifth but silenced the Indian threat. A fielder's choice nabbed the lead man before a fly out and a strikeout ended the frame with Catawba leading, 1-0.

The Raiders got on the board in the sixth with an unearned run. Senior center fielder Eric Herman reached to open the inning after a misplay by the pitcher. A one-out single by sophomore designated hitter Kyle Hollingsworth moved Herman to second base.

With junior right fielder Cody Kulp at the plate, Herman stole third base and scored after the throw from the catcher went awry.

SU got a one-out double in the seventh from junior third baseman Tyler Basso and a leadoff single in the eighth by freshman second baseman Jimmy Spanos, but both runners were ultimately stranded.

Catawba (4-2) won the game in its final at-bat with a one-out flourish. A tough fly in the sun resulted in double for Ryan Bostian and Julio Zubillaga followed with a single to place runners on second and third. After an intentional walk, cleanup hitter Ethan Satterfield delivered the game-winning sacrifice fly to left field.

Scott nearly had both Bostian and Zubillaga struck out in the frame before both men ended up reaching base. He took the loss but delivered an excellent performance, yielding just one run on three hits while striking out two. Scott pitched 1-2-3 innings in the sixth and seventh and did not allow a hit in his first three innings on the mound Sunday.

Shippensburg will travel next weekend to Barton for a three-game series with the Bulldogs. Saturday's doubleheader begins at noon.
