Men’s Basketball Uses Strong Second Half to Defeat Cheyney in 82-75 Comeback Victory

Royal scores 22 points to lead a group of six Raiders with at least eight points

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Senior Will Royal scored a season-high 22 points on Saturday afternoon to lead a group of four Raiders in double figures as the Shippensburg University men's basketball team used a commanding second half to spark a 82-75 comeback victory over Cheyney from Heiges Field House.

Six Shippensburg (7-13, 4-10 PSAC) players scored at least eight points to help off-set a 31-point performance from Cheyney's (3-14, 2-13 PSAC) Chris Sabb and a 21-point effort from teammate Brandon Baylor.

Royal was a perfect 10-of-10 from the free throw line and 6-of-12 from the floor to go along with a game-high 12 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season.

Seniors Jordan Stasyszyn and Dane Lauber each scored 16 points. Stasyszyn went 6-of-11 from the floor and added three rebounds, while Lauber shot 6-of-10 and added seven rebounds and two assists.

Freshman Reggie Charles scored 12 points to go along with four rebounds and a game-high five assists.

Senior Craig Van Scyoc went 2-of-3 from beyond the arc to finish with eight points, while freshman Sam Pygatt also scored eight points on 4-of-6 shooting to go along with five rebounds.

Down 21-15 with 9:32 left in the first half, Shippensburg used back-to-back Royal jumpers and a Charles layup to spark a 6-0 run to tie it at 21.

From their, a 15-3 run by Cheyney opened up a 38-26 Wolves advantage – their largest lead of the game – with 3:06 left in the half. Shippensburg would twice get to within seven points before the end of the period, and a Charles buzzer-beating layup closed Cheyney's advantage to 43-35 at the break.

Bit by bit, Shippensburg chipped away at Cheyney's lead in the second half. Finally, at the 13:30 mark, the Raiders – facing a 10-point deficit, down 56-46 – started to take control, going off on a commanding 23-4 run to grab a 69-60 lead.

During that sequence, a Charles layup gave Shippensburg its first lead since an early 13-12 advantage, and a Lauber three-point play on SU's next possession gave the Raiders the lead for good, at 63-60. After a missed Cheyney jumper, Charles finished off an SU fast break with an alley-oop pass to Pygatt, whose dunk attempt bounced in.

Shippensburg went up by as much as 10, after Charles drained his only three-pointer of the game at the 4:49 mark. The Raiders made 8-of-11 free throws in the final four minutes to seal the win.

SU shot 66.7 percent in the second half after shooting just 41.2 percent for the first half.

The Raiders will travel Wednesday to Kutztown for an 8 p.m. tipoff against the Golden Bears.
