Wrestling Gets Pins From Myers and Lindquist to Sneak Past ESU, 21-20

SU snaps nine-match skid versus ESU, earns first dual win over Warriors since '99

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University wrestling team won five of the nine contested bouts on Thursday night and received crucial pins from sophomores Cody Myers and John Lindquist to snap a nine-match losing streak against East Stroudsburg with a 21-20 dual meet victory from Heiges Field House.

Shippensburg (7-8) earned its first dual meet victory over the Warriors since Feb. 13, 1999 with an aggressive approach on the mat that paid dividends in several matches. Despite dropping two major decisions among the first three bouts, SU remained close thanks to Myers – who picked up his third consecutive pin by putting ESU freshman Chris Davis on his back in 93 seconds.

The momentum began to swing in Shippensburg's favor at 149 pounds, where sophomore Kenny Stank earned a 5-0 decision over ESU senior Andrew Ritchie. Stank, who was wrestling down a weight class for the first time this season after 15 bouts at 157 pounds, accrued over five minutes of riding time in the victory.

Lindquist came out with authority at 157 pounds and was attacking ESU freshman Mike Honeywell from the opening whistle. After a quick takedown, Lindquist eventually got the pin on the far edge of the mat in just 62 seconds. Lindquist has now won three consecutive bouts at 157 pounds and is 7-3 overall. He has picked up bonus points in five of his seven victories.

The key was at 165 pounds, where freshman Neil Grudi earned a 6-2 decision over ESU sophomore Braden Turner. Grudi overcame an early takedown with a first-period reversal and eventually got a takedown of his own in the second period to take control.

Last week, Grudi made a statement with a 14-4 major decision over UNC-Pembroke's Brendon Parker-Risk, who entered that bout as the region's No. 2 ranked wrestler at 157 pounds. His opponent Thursday night was Turner, who was wrestling up one weight class but still entered as the region's No. 6-ranked wrestler at 157 pounds.

Senior Tyler Zittle picked up his 10th win of the season with a 6-2 decision at 184 pounds, yielding his only points through escapes. Zittle now ranks second on the team in victories this season behind Myers, who picked up his 11th with his pin.

Shippensburg returns to action on Saturday from Millersville University with competition in the Mid-Penn Duals. SU is scheduled to face York, Thaddeus Stevens and the host Marauders. The first round of bouts begins at 10 a.m. from Pucillo Gymnasium.
