SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's basketball team missed a potential game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer and dropped a 67-66 heartbreaker at the hands of Bloomsburg on Wednesday night in the Raiders' PSAC Eastern Division opener from Heiges Field House.
Down a point with 6.2 seconds left in the game, senior
Craig Van Scyoc inbounded the ball from just inside midcourt. Senior
Jordan Stasyszyn attempted a three-pointer from the wing but the ball hit the front rim and fell short just as the horn sounded.
Van Scyoc had a career night, hitting 5-of-7 three-pointers and led all scorers with his career-best 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting. His biggest shot came with 42 ticks left, when he drained a three-pointer to give Shippensburg (6-9, 3-6 PSAC) a 66-65 advantage.
On the prior possession, Bloomsburg (11-3, 7-2 PSAC) gained its first lead of the game – after chipping away at an 11-point Shippensburg advantage with 14:29 to play – with two free throws from Trevon Johnson. This came after BU's Nnamdi Njoku tied the game at 63-all with his second three-pointer of the game just 43 seconds earlier.
Van Scyoc's three-pointer was followed up by two more free throws by Johnson with 30 seconds left that turned into the game-winning points.
Senior
Dane Lauber scored 17 points – giving him 36 combined in the last two games – to go along with five assists and five rebounds. Freshman
Reggie Charles had a game-high seven assists, while senior
Will Royal added six points and 10 rebounds.
Shippensburg played well in the first half, with Lauber contributing 11 points and freshman
Sam Pygatt adding seven on 3-of-3 shooting from the field. A Pygatt layup with just over two minutes remaining extended the Raiders lead to seven at the half, 33-26.
Back-to-back three pointers by Van Scyoc and Stasyszyn opened the lead to 11 just two minutes into the second half. Another three by Van Scyoc just over three minutes later again brought the lead to 11, and from there, Bloomsburg made its run.
Holding onto a 63-58 advantage with 2:45 remaining, Shippensburg gave up a layup by Dontahe Jordan before Njoku's three-pointer knotted it at 63.
The Raiders held Johnson – who entered the game seventh in the country with 7.1 assists per game – to just one assist on the night.
