LAKELAND, Fla. – The Shippensburg University women's volleyball team went 0-2 in the Florida Southern Classic in Lakeland, Fla. on Saturday. The Raiders (0-4) fell to Rollins in straight sets (16-25, 10-25, 21-25) before losing a nailbiter to tournament host Florida Southern in five sets (21-25, 25-23, 19-25, 26-24, 10-15).
In the exciting five-set affair against Florida Southern, sophomore
Jill Edwards ripped a career-high 30 kills and hit .247. #Junior
Jenny Pry added 10 kills and was efficient with a .267 hitting percentage. Junior Andrea Heimsoth# had 48 assists – her most in a match since Oct. 30, 2009.
SU will next travel to Shepherdstown, W.Va. to participate in the Shepherd Tournament, with its first game on Friday, Sept. 9 at 9 a.m. versus host Shepherd.
Rollins 3, Shippensburg 0
Despite four kills from
Jill Edwards in the opening frame, the Raiders were unable to gain traction, dropping a 25-16 set. SU took a step backward in the second set, losing 25-10. Edwards and senior
Libby Woffindin led Shippensburg with four kills each in the frame.
SU was more competitive in the third set, at times crawling back to deficits of just two and three in the second half of the frame. Down 23-21 after three consecutive points, the Raiders couldn't sustain the momentum as it gave up back-to-back points to lose the set and match. Edwards and Woffindin finished with 11 and 10 kills respectively.
Florida Southern 3, Shippensburg 2
The Raiders led for slightly more than half of the first set, but Florida Southern rallied back, eventually grabbing a 23-18 lead. SU couldn't counter though, getting as close as 24-21 before losing the next point to end the set.
The script was flipped in the second frame, with the Raiders behind for the majority of the set. Down 19-16, they scored four of the next five points to knot it at 20. With the score again tied at 23, Edwards came through in the clutch for the Raiders with back-to-back kills to end the set, tying the match at one apiece.
SU again failed to get going in the third set, eventually losing, 25-19. The teams swapped leads for much of the fourth set, but at 24-all and the game on the line, Edwards came through again with another kill to put her team in a set-point situation. An attack error by Florida Southern then gave the Raiders the win in the fourth.
Playing from behind in the deciding set, Shippensburg dropped the final set, 15-10, to finish the match. Edwards' 30 kills led both teams, while Woffindin's three service aces were tops amongst Raiders. Defensively, sophomore
Tessa Bivens had 18 digs, followed by 16 from junior
Lauren Murphy.
