KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team split its second straight road doubleheader in conference play on a frigid Friday afternoon at Kutztown, winning the opener, 6-4, before dropping the nightcap, 12-1. Senior
AJ Czap finished the day with three hits and four RBIs.
Shippensburg (11-13, 4-2 PSAC East) took a 3-0 lead in the second inning of the opening game. A leadoff single by freshman
Pat Kregeloh, a sacrifice by sophomore
Steve Sulcoski and a one-out walk by senior
Kris Kullman set the stage for Czap, who doubled home both men and also scored on the play after a couple of errors by the Golden Bears.
Kutztown (12-8, 2-4 PSAC East) answered in the third with a pair of two-run home runs against sophomore
Tom Bush, who gutted out four innings and ultimately improved his record to 4-0. Bush also struck out four batters.
In the fifth, SU re-took the lead. Junior
Ben Miller led off with a single, was sacrificed to second, and scored on an RBI-single by Kregeloh. Sulcoski later hit a sacrifice fly that scored junior
Tyler Uphouse, who walked before Kregeloh's RBI-single.
Kutztown used a big third inning to take control of the nightcap. A combination of dings and dents by the Golden Bears along with three Raider errors led to 10 runs and a 12-1 KU lead. Junior
Nick Umberger was charged with the loss.
Shippensburg hosts Kutztown on Saturday at 1 p.m. in a doubleheader from Fairchild Field.
