ERIE, Pa. — The Shippensburg University men's basketball team had four players finish in double figures on Saturday afternoon and had its second-best output of the season from the free-throw line but fell victim to a potent and efficient offensive attack by host Gannon in a 94-75 loss from the Hammermill Center.
Shippensburg (4-7, 2-4 PSAC), playing without the services of injured sophomore
Dylan Edgar, grabbed a one-point lead after the first seven minutes before the Golden Knights answered with an 8-0 run to go up 20-13 at the midway point of the opening frame. The hosts stretched their lead to 13 points by halftime and led by as many as 20 points in the second half.
Freshman
Reggie Charles had one of his best shooting games in his young career, scoring a team-high 18 points. He nailed three huge three-pointers in the first half that kept the Raiders in the game and entered the intermission with 13 points.
Senior
Craig Van Scyoc was 4-of-5 from three-point range and finished with 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting. Overall, SU shot 9-of-16 from three-point range in the contest.
Graduate
Dane Lauber made his second start of the season and made the most of his playing time with 15 points, five rebounds and four assists. Lauber was a perfect 10-of-10 from the free-throw line to match the school record for the best single-game percentage from the charity stripe with a minimum of 10 attempts.
Senior
Jordan Stasyszyn posted double figures for the third straight game, finishing with 12 points and three assists. Ten of Stasyszyn's 12 points came in the second half.
Senior
Will Royal had nine points and six rebounds in 30 minutes of action. SU got 68 of its 75 points in Saturday's game from the starting five.
The Raiders also continued to improve at the free-throw line, making 20-of-25 from the charity stripe. This weekend, SU was 36-of-47 (76.6 percent) from the free-throw line.
Gannon (5-3, 4-2 PSAC) took advantage of the size mismatch in the post — recording a 36-20 advantage in rebounding. Included in that total are 16 offensive rebounds that led to 18 second-chance points. Gannon also scored a whopping 52 points in the paint.
The Golden Knights also attempted 30 more shots in the game than Shippensburg (73 to 43), making 41 of them en route to a 56.2 field-goal percentage. Further maddening Shippensburg was the efficiency of Gannon's offense, as the hosts dished out 26 assists and committed just five turnovers in the contest.
Gannon's three starting post players – Stephen Battle, Darrell Blanton and Dmitry Martynenko, combined for 48 points and 23 rebounds. Martynenko had 13 points and seven rebounds at halftime while Blanton scored 14 of his game-high 20 points in the second half.
Shippensburg returns to action at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 3 versus Penn State Wilkes-Barre from Heiges Field House.
Notes: Tyrone Burton (1996-97 season vs. UPJ) and Bryan Rehm (1992-93 season vs. Clarion) hold the school record for free-throw percentage efficiency by shooting 12-of-12 in one game…
Will Royal's 13 made free throws in Friday's loss to Clarion are the most in one game by an SU player since Jeff Madara in 2003.
