SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's basketball team clawed back from a 12-point second half deficit to take the lead with just over three minutes remaining, but eventually fell, 74-71, to California (Pa.) in its PSAC opener on Saturday afternoon from Heiges Field House.
The Raiders (0-3, 0-1 PSAC) had three players score in double figures, led by sophomore
Dylan Edgar and his career-high 18 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field. Edgar also added 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season.
Senior
Craig Van Scyoc and freshman
Reggie Charles each had 11 points, while senior
Will Royal scored 10 on 5-of-8 shooting. Van Scyoc was 3-for-3 from beyond the arc before his final attempt to tie the game with two seconds left bounced off the rim for his only miss of the afternoon.
Senior
Jordan Stasyszyn had a team-high five assists.
After SU led by as much as 11 points in the first half, a late rally by the Vulcans (3-0, 1-0) closed Shippensburg's lead to just five at the break. But California (Pa.) gained control in the second half, grabbing a 12-point lead with just under 10 minutes to play.
From there, Shippensburg fought its way back, and with 3:07 remaining, Edgar put the Raiders up one with a layup off an assist by Van Scyoc.
Back-to-back buckets by the Vulcans put California (Pa.) back on top by three, before senior
Dane Lauber connected on a three-point play to tie it back up at 71-71 with 57 seconds left.
California (Pa.) scored a layup on the ensuing possession, however, to give the Vulcans a lead that they would not relinquish.
Shippensburg will host No. 19 IUP at 3 p.m. tomorrow from Heiges Field House.
