SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University volleyball team dropped its seventh five-set match of the season on Saturday from Heiges Field House in an epic battle with reigning WVIAC tournament finalist Alderson-Broaddus by set scores of 24-26, 25-14, 18-25, 25-19 and 15-13.
Shippensburg (4-13) seemingly cannot catch a break as it has played well and gone deep in the majority of its matches this season but come up just short. Saturday's loss is its second home match this season in which it traded sets with a strong opponent but ended up losing the tiebreaking final set by a 15-13 margin. SU has only lost in straight sets three times this season.
The Raiders exploded out of the gates with 15 kills in the first set and hit .355 as a team. Providing a lot of momentum for Shippensburg on Saturday was sophomore
Tessa Bivens, who thrived in the middle with a career-high 10 kills. She hit .250 overall, tallied four digs and had two solo blocks.
Juniors
Rachel Smicker and
Erin Flick were efficient, tallying seven kills each. Smicker had just one error, totaled 11 digs and hit .316. Flick hit .235 and had four block assists.
Sophomore
Jill Edwards led the Raiders with 18 kills and three service aces. Senior
Libby Woffindin had eight kills and seven digs.
Junior
Andrea Heimsoth had a wonderful afternoon with both her offense and defense. Heimsoth had three timely kills and 43 assists to go along with 20 digs.
Shippensburg will host a PSAC crossover weekend Friday and Saturday from Heiges Field House. On Friday, SU plays IUP at 11:30 a.m. before facing California (Pa.) at 7:30 p.m.
