SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team scored seven runs in the second inning of its opening game of a Tuesday afternoon doubleheader against PSAC East foe Bloomsburg en route to a 10-5 victory before the visiting Huskies scored six runs in the second inning of the second game to force a split with the Red Raiders, 10-6.

Shippensburg (10-22, 5-7 PSAC East) held a 10-0 lead through five innings of the opener on the strength of six doubles and some timely hitting. Freshman catcher Kyle Hollingsworth started the second with a double and scored on a single by junior first baseman Kris Kullman after the throw into the diamond flew off the pitcher's mound.

After an RBI-double by junior center fielder AJ Czap and a single by senior third baseman Kevin Scholly, sophomore shortstop Ben Miller plated both runners with a two-run double that gave SU a 4-0 lead. Sophomore left fielder Tyler Uphouse hit a ground-rule double in the net at-bat to put the Red Raiders up by five runs.

Sophomore right fielder Cody Kulp drove home Uphouse with a single and with two outs, Hollingsworth hit his second double of the inning to plate Kulp. SU added two more runs in the third through a groundout by sophomore second baseman Eric Herman and an RBI-double by Uphouse. In the fifth, Ben Miller delivered an RBI-single.

The offense was more than enough run support for sophomore Jimmy Miller, who threw five shutout innings and improved his record to 3-3. Scholly made his collegiate pitching debut while freshman David McKolosky entered to record the final out.

In the second game, the Huskies roughed up freshman starter Tom Bush, who couldn't escape the second inning. Trailing 7-0, Kulp launched a three-run homer in the third inning to put SU on the board and Uphouse added a sacrifice fly in the fifth. The Red Raiders would not get any closer.

Czap finished the afternoon 4-for-7 at the plate with two doubles, a triple, an RBI and three runs scored. Ben Miller was also 4-for-7 with a double, four RBIs and two runs. Scholly had three hits in the opener while Uphouse and Hollingsworth each had two doubles.

The busy schedule continues tomorrow when Shippensburg travels to face Indiana (Pa.) in a PSAC crossover doubleheader that begins at 1 p.m.

Notes: The victory marked the 100th for Shippensburg head coach Matt Jones while at the helm of the Red Raiders.
