SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team got solid starts from sophomore
Ted Williams and sophomore
Jimmy Miller on a rainy and cloudy Friday afternoon from Fairchild Field but could not establish a rhythm offensively, dropping both games of a PSAC Eastern Division doubleheader to Mansfield by scored of 5-3 and 2-1.
Shippensburg (12-30, 6-12 PSAC East) got single runs in the first, third and fifth innings and were tied 3-3 with the Mountaineers through five innings, but the Mountaineers got two runs in the sixth off
Jimmy Miller and held on for the victory. Sophomore right fielder
Cody Kulp and junior first baseman
Kris Kullman each had two hits in the opener.
The Red Raiders got on the board in the first with an RBI-double from Kullman. Kulp hit a single to left-center field in the third inning that plated sophomore shortstop
Ben Miller. Another RBI-single from Kullman in the fifth got the Red Raiders their third run but the bases were left loaded after a strikeout ended the inning.
SU did not record an extra-base hit in the nightcap and mustered just four hits against Mansfield starter Justin Garcia. Its only run of the game came across the plate in the fourth inning on a safety squeeze executed by senior third baseman
Kevin Scholly that plated
Jimmy Miller.
Williams went 6.1 innings in the second game, allowing just two runs on six hits while striking out five. Freshman
David McKolosky induced a key double play in the seventh inning and also threw a shutout inning in the opener. Miller allowed four runs and 10 hits in six innings of work during the opener while striking out three batters.
The Red Raiders travel to Mansfield on Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
