SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Junior center fielder
AJ Czap had two hits and two RBIs for the Shippensburg University baseball team on Wednesday afternoon from Fairfax Field in another entertaining contest with regional rival Shepherd but ultimately dropped a 4-3 decision in nine innings to the host Rams.
Shippensburg (12-28) took a 2-0 lead in the opener with a two-out, two-run single from Czap that plated junior catcher
Kris Kullman and sophomore shortstop
Ben Miller. The lead lasted until the third inning when the Rams got two runs off the Red Raider starter, senior
Kyle Chronister.
Two relief pitchers stabilized the opposing hitters with solid relief performances. Freshman
Josh Scott threw 2.2 shutout innings of relief, allowing three hits and a walk with one strikeout. Sophomore
Ryan Rehman pitched two scoreless innings of relief with one strikeout. Sophomore right fielder
Cody Kulp added a solo home run in the seventh inning that tied the score at 3-3.
Shepherd (17-17) won the game in the bottom of the ninth against sophomore
Nick Umberger. After a strikeout, the Rams got a double and a walk. The runners advanced on a stolen base and a wild pitch, and another walk loaded the bases. Tyler Beard then drew a walk with the bases loaded to plate the winning run.
Czap and Kullman each had two hits while sophomore
Jimmy Miller drew three of SU's six walks. Senior third baseman
Kevin Scholly and sophomore second baseman
Eric Herman each had a hit and a stolen base.
The Red Raiders will host Mansfield at 1 p.m. Friday in a PSAC Eastern Division doubleheader from Fairchild Field.
