SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team plated 19 runs and pounded 25 hits at the dish on Wednesday afternoon in a doubleheader with local rival Pittsburgh-Johnstown, a squad ranked No. 9 in the latest NCBWA regional rankings. SU dropped the opener 11-10 before taking the nightcap, 9-6.

Shippensburg (9-18) fell behind 11-3 in the opening game but mounted a furious rally that began in the bottom of the sixth inning. Sophomore left fielder Tyler Uphouse opened the inning with a double and scored in the next at-bat after a two-run round tripper by sophomore right fielder Cody Kulp.

Sophomore Jimmy Miller doubled with one out and then scored on an RBI-single by junior first baseman Kris Kullman. Freshman catcher Kyle Hollingsworth then came to the plate and smacked a two-run homer that brought Shippensburg within three runs at 11-8. Junior center fielder #A.J. Czap# scored on a fielding error later in the inning and the Red Raiders had two runners on with two outs before Kulp flew out to end the inning.

In the bottom of the seventh, Jimmy Miller was hit by a pitch with one out, stole second base and then came around to score on a two-out single by Hollingsworth. The game ended with junior pinch hitter Jesse Smith grounding out to second base. Sophomore Nick Umberger was charged with the loss after allowing five runs in relief.

Freshman Josh Scott was solid on the mound in the second game, scattering three runs and four hits over five innings while striking out four batters for his fourth victory of the year. He had the benefit of pitching with a lead for most of the game, as SU built a 4-0 after two innings of the nightcap and never looked back.

Shippensburg got RBI-singles in the first inning from Uphouse and senior third baseman Kevin Scholly before sophomore second baseman Eric Herman tripled home a run in the second inning and then came around to score on an RBI-single from sophomore shortstop Ben Miller.

Leading by just one run in the bottom of the fifth, Kullman and Hollingsworth contributed RBI-singles to extend the Red Raider lead before Kullman teed off in the sixth inning with a three-run bomb that proved to be the difference in the game for Shippensburg.

Pitt-Johnstown (12-10) rallied with three runs in the top of the seventh off Kulp and brought the tying run to the plate with two outs before a fly out to Czap ended the game. The Mountain Cats got four RBIs in the second game from designated hitter Andy Ebersole and smacked 15 hits in the opener off four Red Raider pitchers.

Kullman was SU's leader at the plate on Wednesday, going 4-for-8 with a home run, double, seven RBIs and four runs scored. Hollingsworth also had four hits in eight at-bats with a home run, four RBIs and two runs scored. Kulp and Uphouse each had two hits and reached base four times. Eleven different Red Raiders had at least one hit on the day.

The Red Raiders resume PSAC Eastern Division play this Friday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Millersville. Shippensburg will host the Marauders at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
