SALISBURY, N.C. –
The Shippensburg University baseball team completed its season-opening four-game series at No. 17 Catawba by dropping a pair of games on Sunday from Newman Field by scores of 9-5 and 7-1. The Red Raiders finished the weekend with 14 runs over the course of four games.

In the opening game, Shippensburg got its first run when junior Kris Kullman grounded into a double play that plated sophomore left fielder Eric Herman. SU entered the final inning trailing 9-1 but rallied with four runs and got two runners in scoring position before Catawba reliever Clay Watson ended the threat.

The late rally started with a two-run double in the seventh by freshman second baseman Zack Piper that scored senior first baseman Kevin Scholly and freshman catcher Steve Sulcoski. Sophomore right fielder Cody Kulp doubled home Piper and junior center fielder #A.J. Czap#.

Freshman Josh Scott was touched up in his debut for three home runs in 3.2 innings of work. Fellow freshman Tom Bush started the second game but was also roughed up and lasted just 2.2 innings. Junior Kody Kibler came out of the bullpen in both games and finished the day with five strikeouts in 3.1 innings of work. Kibler allowed just one run on three hits.

Shippensburg (0-4) got its only run in the second game with a bases-loaded walk by Kulp that plated Herman, who singled to lead off the sixth inning.

The Red Raiders return to action next weekend with back-to-back doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday from Barton.
