Volleyball Nets First Win of Season In Straight Sets On Day One of 2009 Raider Classic

Lady Raiders easily dispatches Glenville State; falls to WV State in 5

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The Shippensburg University volleyball team ended the opening day of the 2009 Raider Classic with its first victory of the season by dispatching Glenville State but could not come away with a second victory after a five-set loss in the nightcap to West Virginia State.

Shippensburg (1-3) opened the day against the Pioneers of Glenville State and won in straight sets by scores of 25-11, 25-16 and 25-23. Senior Hannah Sorber led the Lady Raiders with 12 kills on just two errors while freshman Andrea Heimsoth contributed 23 assists.

Senior middle blocker Kali Antolik had six kills and contributed well defensively with one solo block and four block assists. Freshman Jenny Pry added five kills against the Pioneers, while sophomore Libby Woffindin had four kills without an error as well as three service aces.

The barnburner came in the nightcap against the Yellowjackets of West Virginia State. Shippensburg fought hard in the opening set and rallied to win it by a 29-27 margin before dropping the second and third sets by respective scores of 25-21 and 25-18. The Lady Raiders came back to win the fourth set 25-22 before falling in the final set, 15-12.

Sorber had another outstanding offensive game with 18 kills on just four errors. She also contributed four block assists and totaled 11 digs to finish with a double-double. For the day, Sorber totaled 30 kills and committed only six errors.

Senior Colleen Toomey had six kills and 19 digs for Shippensburg against the Yellowjackets while Antolik had 13 kills and Woffindin delivered 12 kills. Heimsoth totaled 50 of the team's 59 assists in the match.

Shippensburg returns to action tomorrow with a 12 p.m. matchup against Alderson-Broaddus and a 4 p.m. matchup against Wheeling Jesuit.
