KUTZTOWN, Pa. - The Shippensburg University baseball team came within one out of a doubleheader split on Friday afternoon from Kutztown's North Campus Field but the home-standing Golden Bears rallied with two runs in the seventh inning of the nightcap for a victory that culminated a sweep of the Raiders by scores of 9-5 and 5-4.
Shippensburg (20-27, 9-9 PSAC East) produced another one of its patented two-out rallies in Game 2 that put the team in position for a victory. Consecutive singles from freshman
Cody Kulp and senior
Kasey Kuhns prefaced a walk by freshman
Ben Miller that loaded the bases.
Junior
Kevin Scholly stepped into the box and ripped an RBI-single to score Kulp, and sophomore
Kris Kullman followed with a two-run single that capped off a three-run rally and gave Shippensburg a 4-3 lead entering the bottom of the sixth inning.
Senior
Andrew Burke posted an excellent performance from the mound, allowing three unearned runs in six innings while striking out eight batters. His only blemish was a three-run home run to KU freshman Shayne Houck in the second inning, and he retired six of the final eight batters faced.
Senior
Tyler Redick entered in the bottom of the seventh and retired two of the first four batters he faced. With two outs and runners on first and second, replacement catcher Matt Kulbacki got credit for a single but the lead runner came around to tie the score after the throw home got away from Kullman. After an intentional walk, a single from Mike Kacelowicz ended the game.
In the opener, the Raiders were down 6-1 and rallied with four runs in the fifth before Kutztown pulled away. Senior
Jason Kelly started the contest and lasted three innings, allowing six runs (five earned) and eight hits. Junior
Kyle Chronister pitched well in the fourth but was tagged for three runs (two earned) in the fifth.
Miller has two solo home runs in the opening game off Kutztown ace Darin Gorski, who entered the game as the conference's leader in strikeouts and ERA. The Raiders plated five runs off Gorski in the contest, including RBI-singles from Kulp and sophomore
Steve McCardell.
The Raiders remain in third place in the PSAC East with idle East Stroudsburg sitting in fourth place just one game behind. Mansfield swept Millersville on Friday to move into a tie for fifth place, with each team just two games behind the Raiders. The top four teams from each division qualify for the postseason.
Shippensburg will host the Golden Bears on Saturday from Fairchild Field beginning at 1 p.m.
