SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The Shippensburg University baseball team received solid pitching performances from seniors
Tim Freshour and
Andrew Burke on Friday afternoon from Fairchild Field while scoring 15 runs and compiling 21 hits in a doubleheader sweep of Millersville by scores of 6-3 and 9-1.
Shippensburg (14-17, 4-2 PSAC East) totaled 12 extra-base hits in the two games and finished the day with three home runs. In the opener, senior
Kasey Kuhns smacked a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning off the railing over the right-center field fence and senior
Tyler Redick broke the game open with a three-run shot over the right-field fence in the bottom of the fifth.
Freshour came within one out of another complete game and delivered another solid performance, striking out five and allowing just two earned runs in 6.2 innings of work. He improved his record to 6-2 on the season and Redick got the final out on one pitch to earn his fifth save of the season.
In the second game, Shippensburg scored all nine of its runs in the first four innings. In the first, senior
Kyle Rhoades doubled and freshman
Cody Kulp brought him home with a double off the Gamma Gamma Chapter sign on the left field fence. After Kuhns walked, freshman designated hitter
Jimmy Miller smacked a two-run double to give SU a 3-1 lead after the first inning.
Freshman
Ben Miller had a breakthrough doubleheader for Shippensburg, making several outstanding defensive plays and capping it off with a solo home run in the second inning that gave the Raiders a 4-1 lead. He finished the day 2-for-4 at the plate and was successful on both of his sacrifice attempts.
Burke pitched a complete game in the nightcap for his third victory of the season. He struck out four batters and did not walk anyone while scattering five hits.
Shippensburg will travel to Millersville to take on the Marauders tomorrow from Millersville University Stadium for a doubleheader that begins at 11 a.m. The start time has been moved up two hours to accomodate for potential inclement weather.
