SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Shippensburg senior starting pitcher
Tim Freshour recorded the first no-hitter for the Raider baseball program in 13 years to highlight an all-important doubleheader sweep on Saturday afternoon against visiting Lock Haven by scores of 2-0 and 4-3.
Shippensburg (12-16) received outstanding pitching all day, but the spotlight was clearly on Freshour, who needed just 85 pitches to fashion the team's first no-hitter since Jason Kanovich on April 12, 1996 against Bloomsburg. Freshour is just the seventh pitcher in school history to throw a no-hitter and Saturday's feat is the ninth overall recorded by the Raiders since 1976.
The only two runs scored in the opening game crossed the plate in the bottom of the third inning. Sophomore catcher
Kris Kullman led off with a single and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt. Senior second baseman
Kyle Rhoades then reached on an error, and senior center fielder
Tyler Redick singled home Kullman.
With Rhoades on third base, sophomore shortstop
Steve McCardell hit a sacrifice fly to score the second run and provide Freshour with all the run support he would need. Freshour faced just two batters over the minimum in the contest, walking two while striking out four in his fifth victory of the year.
Senior starting pitcher
Andrew Burke continued his recent success with a dazzling outing in Game 2. Burke held the Bald Eagles to just one run over his first 5.2 innings of work and ultimately recorded his second win of the season by scattering six hits and three runs over six innings, striking out seven batters.
The Raiders took a three-run lead in the bottom of the fourth inning after loading the bases with no outs. Kullman brought in the first run after getting hit by a pitch, but the key play of the game happened two batters later with Rhoades in the box. Rhoades hit a ground ball in the hole that went for a fielder's choice and scored one run, but an errant relay throw by the second baseman plated senior
Kasey Kuhns and gave SU a 4-1 lead.
In the sixth inning, Matt McCamley delivered a clutch two-out, two-run single that brought the Bald Eagles within one run, but Burke recorded a strikeout to get out of the jam and Redick pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning to record his fourth save in five chances.
Freshour and Burke have each dazzled in their previous four outings, dating back to the doubleheader sweep of Slippery Rock on March 5. Over his last 24 innings, Freshour has allowed just three runs (two earned) and has only walked three batters in winning four consecutive starts, while Burke has allowed just six runs to go along with 23 strikeouts in 20.2 innings of work.
Offensively, McCardell finished Saturday's doubleheader 3-for-5 with an RBI and has fashioned a six-game hitting streak. In his first full season as the team's starting shortstop, McCardell leads the team with a .454 batting average and has compiled three home runs and 27 RBIs in 27 games.
Shippensburg returns to action on Wednesday with a nine-inning game from Shepherd that begins at 3 p.m. The Raiders will return to PSAC Eastern Division play next weekend with a home-and-home series against Millersville.
