LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - The Shippensburg University baseball team recorded its fourth consecutive split of a doubleheader on Friday afternoon from Foundation Field in Lock Haven, winning its opener with the Bald Eagles 8-5 before dropping the nightcap, 10-2.
Shippensburg (10-16) trailed 3-2 after three innings of Game 1 but rallied for six unanswered runs from the fourth through sixth inning. The Raiders took a 5-3 lead in the fourth inning on the strength of a two-run double from junior third baseman
Rick Shumway and an RBI-single from senior second baseman
Kyle Rhoades.
In the fifth inning, sophomore shortstop
Steve McCardell led off with a double and eventually scored on a single from junior first baseman
Kevin Scholly. Senior left fielder
Kasey Kuhns later scored on a wild pitch.
Just one inning later, Shumway continued his strong opener with a leadoff double and scored on a sacrifice fly from Rhoades. Shumway finished the opener with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs while Rhoades was 2-for-2 with two RBIs, a walk and a run scored.
Sophomore starting pitcher
Kody Kibler nearly went the distance en route to earning his second victory of the season, allowing five runs on 10 hits in 6.2 innings of work. Senior
Tyler Redick recorded his third save of the season by inducing a groundout with two outs and two runners in scoring position that ended the game.
Lock Haven (8-14) smacked eight runs in the first two innings of the nightcap, as Raider freshman starting pitcher
Nick Umberger took the loss after facing 11 batters and allowing seven runs. McCardell was the offensive star in Game 2, finishing 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
Shippensburg returns to action on Saturday afternoon from Fairchild Field with a doubleheader against Lock Haven. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. The game will be simulcast on student radio station WSYC (88.7 FM) and is available online
