WILMINGTON, Del. - The Shippensburg University baseball rallied from a nine-run deficit on Tuesday afternoon to take a one-run lead heading into the bottom of the ninth inning, but a balk and a double marred the comeback and gave home-standing Wilmington (Del.) University a 14-13 victory from Wilson Field.

Shippensburg (6-12) trailed 10-1 after four innings after freshman starter Jimmy Miller, junior Phil Harnick and freshman Nick Umberger were tagged for eight hits and 10 runs while issuing five walks.

The only runs for the Raiders over the first six innings came on a solo home run from sophomore shortstop Steve McCardell, a double from freshman first baseman Zach Seaman and an RBI-groundout from freshman Eric Broney.

The Raiders got within one run of the lead after a six-run seventh inning that featured seven hits. Seaman doubled in two runs, while McCardell and sophomore Kris Kullman also recorded RBI-doubles. Senior Tyler Redick and freshman Cody Kulp had RBI-singles during the frame.

After more runs were exchanged between the two teams, Shippensburg trailed 12-10 entering the top of the ninth inning. Broney led off the inning reaching on an error, while Kullman walked. With one out, freshman Tyler Uphouse singled to load the bases, but a strikeout led to a two-out confrontation between Redick and Greg Snyder.

Redick responded with a bases-clearing double, scoring Broney, Kullman and Uphouse to give the Raiders a 13-12 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth. After a hit-by-pitch started the bottom of the ninth, Redick moved to the mound from center field. A sacrifice bunt and an intentional walk put runners on first and second base with one out.

While facing second baseman Brandon Scott, a balk was called against Redick that moved both runners into scoring position. Redick fought back to strikeout Scott, but yielded a two-run double to J.T. Gregory that resulted in the Wildcats earning the 14-13 victory.

At the plate, Redick was 2-for-5 with four RBIs, while McCardell was 2-for-5 with three RBIs and three runs. Seaman had three hits and three RBIs, while Uphouse scored three runs off the bench.

Shippensburg is hosting both dates of the PSAC Eastern Division doubleheader schedule set for Friday and Saturday with Bloomsburg. Friday's games were originally scheduled to be played at Bloomsburg but have been moved to Fairchild Field as a result of unplayable field conditions. Both doubleheaders will start at 1 p.m.
