MECHANICSBURG, Pa. - Shippensburg's 200-yard women's freestyle relay team of junior Whitney Garner, freshman Nicole Capozzi, senior Mandi Foltz and senior Theresa Simcic qualified for the 2009 Division II National Championships on Thursday night with a new school record in a time trial at the Cumberland Valley High School Natatorium.

The relay swam after the completion of the 1,000-yard freestyle competition at the PSAC Swimming Championships and completed its 'A' cut with a time of 1:36.24, an automatic qualifier by 0.45 seconds that improved their season-best effort from the Patriot Invitational by more than half of a second.

Shippensburg's quartet broke the previous school record that they had established in November with a time of 1:37.02. The original time by the ladies broke a 15-year-old school record that had been established on February 19, 1993 by Kim Kerstetter, Lynda Vogel, Virginia Eisenman and Cindy Kepler.

In competition from the conference championships, senior Noelle Knupp was the top Lady Raider finisher in the night's lone event. Knupp completed the 1,000-yard freestyle with an NCAA 'B' cut time of 10:47.47 but finished in 13th place. Shippensburg completed the day with five points in the event.

Day two of competition at the 2009 PSAC Swimming Championships begins with preliminary qualifying on Friday morning from the natatorium at Cumberland Valley High School.
