Women's Swimming Veterans Thrive on Senior Day As Shippensburg Defeats Bloomsburg

Lady Raiders win their first dual meet of the season, 153.5-103.5

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The Shippensburg women's swimming team recognized its seniors on Friday afternoon from the Donald N. Miller Pool inside Heiges Field House and swam a strong meet, defeating PSAC opponent Bloomsburg by a 153.5-103.5 margin.

Shippensburg won its first dual meet of the season and earned the top three places in two flights. Sophomore Amy Fisher earned two individual first-place finishes, while senior Theresa Simcic had one individual and one team first-place finish.
 
The Lady Raiders won every individual freestyle event on Friday and Fisher dazzled in two of them. She earned first place in the 200 with a time of 1:59.72 and later won the 500 by more than four seconds with a time of 5:19.47.

Simcic won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.41 seconds, while freshman Nicole Capozzi was second in 26.19. Simcic also teamed with freshman Hayli L'Esperance, freshman Rachel Ballard and freshman Kate Johnson to win the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:53.65.

The 100-yard freestyle was one of Shippensburg's two sweeps, as junior Whitney Garner won with a time of 55.83 seconds; Simcic took second place in 56.16 while senior Mandi Foltz finished in 56.85 for third place.

In the other sweep, Foltz won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:00.63 while L'Esperance finished in 1:02.00 and freshman Elizabeth Pflaum took third in 1:06.63. Pflaum won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:21.18, edging Foltz by 0.23 seconds.

Sophomore Stephanie Mariani edged out a victory in the 100-yard breaststroke by 57 one-hundredths of a second with a time of 1:11.22, while Ballard was also within one second of the victory. Senior Noelle Knupp won the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:01.46.

Shippensburg will return to action on Friday, January 23 with a home meet against Kutztown. Action is set to begin at 6 p.m.
