Game 1
Game 2
EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. - The Shippensburg softball team rebounded from a difficult Friday with a very impressive performance on Saturday at Zimbar Field by sweeping a doubleheader from East Stroudsburg by scores of 1-0 and 5-1. With the victories, the Lady Raiders moved into sole possession of third place in the PSAC Eastern Division.
Shippensburg (24-18, 7-7 PSAC East) received a strong performance in Game 2 from senior
Jill Kirby, who struck out six in seven innings and allowed just one run for her fourth victory of the season. Offensively, sophomore
Lisamarie Ramagli hit a solo home run and an RBI-double while the Lady Raiders broke a 1-1 game open with four runs in the top of the fifth inning.
Freshman
Jill Mullan led off the fifth with a triple into right field, and senior
Sarah Stengl subsequently drove her home with an RBI-single to center field. After a botched sacrifice play in which Stengl scored on an error by the pitcher and freshman
Hope Cornell reached second base, the Warriors recorded two outs and seemed to be escaping the threat.
East Stroudsburg (11-24, 5-9 PSAC East) could not set aside Ramagli, however, who followed up her home run with a double to right field that scored Cornell. Freshman
Maggie Sander replaced Ramagli on the bases and would score two batters later when senior
Liz Good singled her home.
Like Friday's opener with Mansfield, the first game of Saturday's doubleheader featured offense at a premium. The only run of the game came in the top of the fifth inning, when freshman
Moira Johnsen continued her strong hitting at the plate by lacing a two-out double into right-center field off Warrior ace and reigning PSAC Eastern Division Pitcher of the Week Kristen Halvorsen and then scoring one batter later when Good singled her home.
Senior
Dani Shields threw her third shutout of the season and scattered just three hits while striking out two. Shields only yielded three runners in scoring position and did not allow a batter to reach third base in the game. Over her last three appearances, she has allowed just three runs in 17 innings while striking out 10. Halvorsen allowed the one run and four hits while striking out five for East Stroudsburg.
After Kutztown swept Millersville Saturday afternoon, the Lady Raiders remain in third place while idle West Chester moved to fourth place. The Golden Rams play Mansfield tomorrow in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. East Stroudsburg and Millersville dropped to 5-7 with their losses.
For the season, Shippensburg swept East Stroudsburg in four games and outscored the Warriors by an 18-4 margin. The Lady Raiders held East Stroudsburg to three hits or less in all four matchups between the two teams this season.
The Lady Raiders will continue their four-game road trip and look to solidify their standing in the PSAC Eastern Division with a Wednesday doubleheader at Millersville that begins at 3 p.m.
