KISSIMEE, Fla. - The Shippensburg softball team had its four-game win streak snapped Saturday as the Lady Raiders dropped games to Gannon and Wayne State at the Fortune Road Softball Complex to begin their participation in the 2008 Rebel Spring Games. Shippensburg dropped a 6-1 decision to the Knights before losing 4-0 to the Warriors.
In the opener against Gannon, the 2007 GLIAC champions, Shippensburg (5-4) threatened in the first as consecutive two-out singles from senior Amanda Bardo and junior Lori Knopf left a runner in scoring position but both were stranded on base.
Freshman Courtney Steele opened the scoring with a solo home run that skirted the left centerfield fence in the bottom of the second inning, but the Knights tied it in the top of the fourth with an RBI-single from Chastity Guerrero that danced down the right-field line and scored Carol Kienzl.
Gannon then took control in the top of the fifth by scoring four unearned runs against Shippensburg starter Dani Shields. With one out, Holli Michaels reached on an error and later scored on an RBI-single by Kara Hensley that gave the Knights a 2-1 lead.
After a pop-up, Gannon plated three more runs to break the game open. Casee Piquet singled off the out-stretched glove of freshman #Hope Cornell# that rolled into foul territory to score one run and a dropped pop-up resulted in two more unearned runs and a 5-1 lead for the Knights.
Four consecutive singles with two outs led to one more run and a 6-1 victory for Gannon that extended their winning streak to 12-straight.
Shippensburg did not fare any better in game two as the Warriors of Wayne State plated two runs in the bottom of the first and received a shutdown pitching performance from reigning GLIAC Player of the Year Molly Yetman to best the Lady Raiders, 4-0.
Yetman pitched a no-hitter and struck out 14 Lady Raider batters to earn her fourth victory of the season. Senior Liz Good, junior #Rachelle Wedell# and freshman Jill Mullan all drew walks but could not advance beyond first base.
Knopf pitched a complete game for Shippensburg against the Warriors, striking out two in six innings after Shields went the distance in game one and struck out eight and allowing only two earned runs.
Shippensburg will return to action Saturday night against Bentley in a game back at the National Training Center that begins at 5:30 p.m.
