SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The No. 2-ranked Shippensburg University field hockey team converted on three of its attacking penalty corners Wednesday afternoon as it outlasted Millersville, 3-2, in a non-conference matchup at sunny Robb Sports Complex.
Shippensburg (5-1), playing at home for the first time in 18 days, finished with a 10-5 advantage in shots on goal and an 11-4 edge in penalty corners – but had to weather several counterpunches from a Millersville (3-5) squad that made the most of its opportunities.
After a scoreless first quarter, senior
Carme Caracotche Picone slammed home a rebound after the initial shot by her sister, freshman
Juana Caracotche Picone, was stopped by Marauder goalkeeper Emily Hanlon.
Less than three minutes later, Millersville answered. Defender Olivia Kline forced a turnover and sent a ball wide to Megan Alvarez, who delivered a splendid cross that was finished at the far post by Alaina Culbert to even the score.
Late in the third quarter, SU took the lead when senior
Hannah White redirected a shot from
Carme Caracotche Picone by lofting it high into the goal to make it a 2-1 contest.
With less than five minutes to go, junior
Elaina Fragassi received a penalty corner insert from freshman
Isabel Rios and slammed it into the cage to make it a 3-1 game.
Undaunted, the Marauders answered 65 seconds later with the same passing connection. Alvarez once again found Culbert for a goal, this time off a penalty corner, to get the visitors within one. Millersville earned another corner in the final minute, but White and the Raider back lines held strong.
Freshman
Liv Schweighart finished with three saves, including a nifty stop on a redirect by Culbert in the final three minutes. Hanlon, making just her third start of the year for the Marauders, made six saves.
Shippensburg begins conference play at 11 a.m. Saturday when it hosts No. 4 East Stroudsburg at Robb Sports Complex.
