SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's soccer team scored twice to erase an early deficit before falling to Bloomsburg in heartbreaking fashion during a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup on a rainy Saturday afternoon at David See Field, 3-2.
Shippensburg (1-6-2, 0-6-1) answered an early Bloomsburg (6-3, 4-3-0) goal with fantastic first-half strikes from
Andrea Black and
Lannah Werynski to take a 2-1 lead. The Huskies, however, converted a pair of second-half chances, including a 77th-minute game-winner.
Black began the Raider surge with an olimpico-style goal in the 31st minute. The left-footed attacker sent an in-swinging corner kick into the box, curling the ball just underneath the crossbar and across the goal line to even the scoreline at 1-1.
The Raiders kept their foot on the gas offensively, scoring a second to take the lead just ten minutes later.
Werynski received a pass from
Gabrielle Walker on the left wing, cut inside and rocketed a curler that flew past the Bloomsburg keeper and into the top left corner of the net.
Both teams were able to create chances offensively in the second half, but the Huskies were able to turn their chances into goals.
Bloomsburg leveled the score in the 53rd minute courtesy of a Niamh Fanning attempt from virtually the same spot as Werynski's first half goal. In the 77th minute of the match, Bloomsburg's Daryn Savage booted a long free kick into the box that was turned on frame by teammate Lindsey Bull on the doorstep of the SU goal – putting the visitors in front.
Savage assisted on both of the Huskies' second-half goals.
The rain began to come down harder during the final 15 minutes of the match, making it much more difficult for the Raiders to maintain possession as they attempted to send more numbers forward.
The evenly-matched contest saw SU post a 6-to-4 advantage in shots on goal and a 4-to-3 margin in corner kicks.
Emma Eisenhart and Walker each had two shots on goal for the Raiders.
Bloomsburg goalkeeper Izzy Hoffeditz finished with four saves.
SU's next contest is a road matchup against Mansfield Wednesday, Sept. 30 starting at 2 p.m.
