The No. 2 Shippensburg University field hockey team peppered the Frostburg State cage to the tune of 20 shots on goal, scoring four times in a 4-1 nonleague victory Wednesday afternoon at Bobcat Stadium.
Â
The Shippensburg (4-1) attack tilted the pitch against Frostburg State (3-4) with a 20-to-4 advantage in shots on target and a 10-to-4 margin in penalty corners.
Anne Gardner netted a pair of goals.
Emily Bitters and
Elaina Fragassi also found the back of the cage.
Â
The Raiders' first two goals – and three of the four total -- came off penalty corners.
Â
SU took the lead just 59 seconds after the opening whistle, as Bitters came in from her position as penalty corner inserter to tip a Fragassi blast for the opening tally.
Â
The Raiders doubled their advantage eight minutes later. Fragassi received the ball at the top of the circle and dribbled past a pair of Bobcat defenders before swatting a near post attempt past FSU netminder Jenna Yazzetti.
Â
Gardner netted her first with a tremendous solo effort with five minutes gone in the second quarter. The SU attacker beat her mark on a surging run down the endline. The Frostburg defense was late to collapse on Gardner as she entered the circle, allowing her to place a low attempt into the far corner of the cage.
Â
Gardner scored her second by cleaning up the rebound of a
Hannah White attempt just 1:13 into the second half.
Â
Frostburg State's Jenna Yazzetti was busy in the Bobcat cage, finishing with 15 saves.
Â
Emma Price spoiled the SU shutout, scoring FSU's lone goal with just 2:02 remaining.
Â
Liv Schweighart and
Grace Meinke split time in the Raider cage, combining for three saves. Meinke's two stops are a single-game high for her as a Raider.
Â
Shippensburg returns to Robb Sports Complex next Wednesday when it hosts Millersville in a nonleague contest set for 4 p.m.
