SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Director of Athletics Jeff Michaels announced Tuesday that Andrew Hale '23 has been hired as the head coach of men's & women's swimming at Shippensburg University.
 
Hale returns to his alma mater after spending the 2025-26 season as the full-time assistant coach at Clarion under the direction of Brehan Kelley. The Golden Eagle men's and women's teams each placed fourth at this year's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships.
 
"I am super excited to be the next head coach at Shippensburg University," Hale said. "I am even more excited to be returning to the program where I developed as a swimmer, student, and individual for five years. It is an honor to be taking over for Tim Verge and to continue to strengthen and develop the program."
 
For the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons, Hale served as a graduate assistant coach for the women's swimming team at Millersville under the direction of another Raider alumnus, Evan Anthony '19. Hale contributed to a coaching staff that instructed athletes who set 10 school records in two seasons. The Marauders placed fifth at the conference meet in 2025.
 
As a collegiate swimmer, Hale excelled with the Raiders from 2018-23. He remains the school-record holder in the 200-yard individual medley (IM) with a time of 1:52.30 and also holds SU's fastest time in the less-frequently contested 100-yard IM (52.29 seconds).
 
In 2021, a season in which the Raiders finished second at the PSAC Championships, Hale set his school record in the 200-yard IM and earned All-PSAC finishes in both breaststroke and both IM events at the conference meet.
 
Hale's versatility was evidenced by the fact that he competed in six different individual events during his career at the PSAC Championships. In addition to his school records, Hale ranks among SU's all-time Top 10 efforts in six different events: he is second in school history in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:03.71), fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke (56.90 seconds), fifth in the 100-yard backstroke (51.58 seconds), sixth in the 400-yard IM (4:06.64), eighth in the 100-yard freestyle (46.53 seconds) and 10th in the 100-yard butterfly (51.21 seconds).
 
Overall, Hale was a 19-time PSAC individual place winner who earned six All-PSAC (Top 3) classifications. He was also a part of six scoring relays at the PSAC Championships.
 
Hale graduated from Shippensburg in 2023, earning a bachelor's degree in history with social studies teaching certification while earning minors in coaching and exercise science. He graduated from Millersville in 2025, receiving his master's degree in sport management with a concentration in athletic coaching. 
 
He replaces Tim Verge '89, who announced his retirement in March after 27 seasons as the head coach at his alma mater.
