SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University softball team picked up a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader sweep over West Chester on Saturday afternoon, winning Game 1, 14-0 in five innings and Game 2, 2-1 in nine innings, on a sunny afternoon at Robb Field.
Shippensburg (27-13, 14-8 PSAC East) totaled 22 hits on the day, totaling 16 runs. West Chester (22-17, 12-10 PSAC East) finished the day with 11 hits, eight of those coming in Game 2. The Raiders outscored the Golden Rams 16-1 on the day.
Brie Wilmot led the SU offense with four hits, two from each game. Wilmot delivered a pair of clutch hits in Game 2, tying the game with a two-out RBI single in the seventh before delivering a walk-off home run. She totaled five RBIs off four singles and the home run.
Caitlyn Martell,
Gianna Cimino, and
Emilee Sullivan each recorded three hits on the day.
Martell set a new program record in Game 1, recording her 207th start of her career. The previous career record was set in 2004 by Brenna Eck. Martell also broke the record for most games played, held previously by Jaime Dacey and Eck.
Dani Hayward delivered two impressive performances in the circle for the Raiders, recording both wins. She finished the day with two strikeouts, walking three batters and allowing just seven hits in 10 scoreless innings.
Game 1: SHIP 14, WCU 0 (5 innings)
The Raider offense plated 12 runs off of 16 at-bats in the second inning.
Cimino led off with a double to left field, followed by a hit by pitch. A pair of Golden Ram errors scored the first two runs of the day to make it 2-0. Martell and
Leah Schwalm hit back-to-back singles to make it 5-0. Cimino got her second hit of the inning, an RBI single, to make it 7-0.
Rilee Ehrlacher and Wilmot plated runs with RBI singles, 9-0. An additional West Chester error and a sacrifice fly from Martell increase the SU lead to 12-0.
West Chester recorded its first hit of the day in the top of the third inning and had runners in scoring position after a Raider error, but a pair of groundouts kept it at 12-0.
Wilmot added to the Raider lead in the bottom of the third, driving in two runs with a single to make it 14-0.
The Golden Rams recorded a double in the top of the fourth, but left the runner stranded after back-to-back outs.
SU threatened to increase the lead in the bottom of the fourth after a hit by pitch and a single from
Lindsey Haser, but a strikeout from West Chester ended the inning.
The Golden Rams got one hit in the top of the fifth but were unable to score ending the game via run rule.
Hayward completed the game in the circle for the Raiders, recording a strikeout and only allowing three hits.
Cimino, Martell, Wilmot and
Sarah Sabocsik recorded two hits in Game 1. Wilmot led the team with three RBIs off a pair of singles. Eight Raiders recorded at least one hit.
Game 2: SHIP 2, WCU 1 (9 innings)
Kaira Zamadics got the start in the circle for SU and retired the first three Golden Ram batters to start the game.
Martell and
Reagan Bauman recorded singles in the bottom of the first, but a double play from West Chester kept the game scoreless.
The Golden Rams had the chance to score in the top of the second with two runners on after a single and a hit by pitch, but Zamadics recorded her first strikeout of the day to end the inning.
Rilee Ehrlacher singled in the bottom of the second. The West Chester defense quickly ended the inning with their second double play in as many innings.
The Golden Rams plated their first and only run of the day in the top of the fourth inning. With two outs, Cierra O'Neal and Holly Muni notched doubles to make it 1-0.
Hayward entered the circle in the top of the fifth inning. The Golden Rams had an opportunity to score after a double and a walk, but an infield fly and a fielder's choice play kept it 1-0.
Ehrlacher reached base after a West Chester error and Sullivan singled with two outs, but a flyout kept the Raiders from plating a run.
The Golden Rams threatened to increase their lead in the top of the seventh after a single and a Raider error. Hayward and the Raiders worked out of the inning to keep it at 1-0.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Wilmot, with an 1-2 count, delivered her first clutch hit of the game – an RBI single up the middle – to make it 1-1. Sullivan then followed with her second single of the game, but a fielder's choice sent the game into extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, SU got two straight outs after a pop fly and a strikeout from Hayward. West Chester recorded a single to put a runner on, but a fly out kept the game tied.
Bauman and Haser reached base in the bottom of the eighth with singles. A strikeout ended the inning.
Mairead Hopkins led off the top of the ninth with a single and reached second after a Raider error. Three straight outs from the Raider defense sent the game to the bottom of the ninth.
With one out and a 1-2 count, Wilmot launched her fifth home run of the season to end the game at 2-1.
Hayward recorded her second win of the day, pitching five innings, recording a strikeout and allowing four hits. Zamadics pitched four innings, with a strikeout, walking just one batter and allowing four hits.
Wilmot, Sullivan and Bauman paced the Raider offense with two hits apiece. Wilmot recorded both RBIs for the Raiders with the game-tying RBI single and the walk off home run.
