SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University lacrosse team could not solve the back lines of No. 15 Kutztown on Saturday, dropping a 16-5 decision to the Golden Bears in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division action at a sunny and breezy Robb Sports Complex.

Shippensburg (5-8, 2-6 PSAC East) kept with Kutztown (8-5, 4-4) in the first quarter, staking out a 3-1 lead in the first seven minutes. The Raiders, however, managed just two goals in the remaining 53 minutes and only one goal in the final 42 minutes of play.

With the score 4-4 at the 13:10 mark of the second quarter, the Golden Bears proceeded to hold the Raiders scoreless for the next 20 minutes.

KU led 8-4 at halftime and outscored the Raiders 8-1 in the second half.

The visitors had a 30-18 advantage in shots on goal and a 14-8 edge in draw controls while forcing eight failed clears and recording 17 caused turnovers. Golden Bear defender Summer Davis had seven caused turnovers and five groundballs while goalkeeper Marissa Bragg made 13 saves.

Izzy Sawicki kept the Raiders in it with a career-high 14 saves, recording seven in each half.

Alexa Bailey and Lexi Koz each scored twice, while Ali Pioli also found the back of the net with a nifty first-quarter tally.

Jill Ahlgren and Olivia Glinski each had one assist.

Grace DeMarzio had six of Shippensburg's eight draw controls, led the team with three caused turnovers, and tied for Maddie Phommachanh for the team high in groundballs with three.

DeMarzio is now three draw controls shy of 200 for her career. She became the 11th player in school history to record 60 or more draw controls in a single season, as her season total is now 62.

Shawn Coombs and Brynn Hauck  each recorded two caused turnovers and two groundballs.

Shippensburg hits the road Wednesday for a 3 p.m. match at undefeated East Stroudsburg.
