RECAP: Lacrosse’s second half comeback falls short against Frostburg, 11-10

Wood nets a career-high four goals, Pioli reaches 200 career draw controls

The Shippensburg University lacrosse team stormed back from a halftime deficit for the second time in four days, only this time its comeback attempt came up just short in a road nonconference battle Saturday at Frostburg State, falling 11-10.

Shippensburg (3-2) scored five consecutive goals to start the third quarter after trailing Frostburg State (3-1) by three goals at halftime, 7-4. The offensive outburst turned the deficit into a 9-7 SU advantage, but Frostburg followed with four straight tallies to come away victorious.

Shannon Wood and Maddie Phommachanh combined for seven of the ten Raider goals. Wood tallied a career-high four goals on the day, while Phommachanh recorded her second straight hat trick – and third in five games this season.

The Raider rally began with an Alexa Bailey goal with 13:10 left in the third quarter. Phommachanh followed with her second five minutes later, and Olivia Glinski found the cage off a feed from Brynn Hauck just seconds later to even the score, 7-7.

Phommachanh's third gave Shippensburg its first lead since the early minutes of the opening quarter, and a free position goal from Aubrey Bailey gave the Raiders a 9-7 cushion.

The Bobcats ended the third quarter with back-to-back goals, including one with 19-seconds remaining on the clock, to bring the two teams back level, 9-9. The hosts then scored two more inside the first two minutes of the fourth to regain a two-goal edge.

Wood scored her fourth goal with 3:48 remaining in regulation to give the Raiders a chance again late resulting in the 11-10 final.

Hanna Woolf recorded four groundballs for Shippensburg.

Grace DeMarzio led the team with four draw controls. Ali Pioli (Barto, Pa./Boyertown Area) added three draw controls. She became the third player in school history to reach 200 career draw controls, with now 201 for her career.

Shawn Coombs posted a team-high four caused turnovers.

Goalkeeper Izzy Sawicki made 11 saves in her first start as a Raider.

Avery O'Hara scored five goals for Frostburg, who has now defeated Bloomsburg, Shepherd and the Raiders consecutively.

Shippensburg opens Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division play when it hosts Bloomsburg Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Robb Sports Complex.
