RECAP: Softball splits doubleheader with No. 24 Pace

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University softball team split its non-conference doubleheader against No. 24 Pace on Saturday afternoon. The Raiders won Game 1, 9-1 in five innings, while the visiting Setters took Game 2, 7-4, at Robb Field.
 
Shippensburg (5-3) recorded 16 hits on the day and scored 13 runs. Pace (1-1) opened its season with 11 hits, plating eight runs.
 
Reagan Bauman and Gianna Cimino led the Raider offense with four hits apiece. Bauman went 4-for-5 at the plate with a home run, a double, tallying two RBIs. Cimino collected four RBIs off a home run and two singles.
 
Rilee Ehrlacher, Lindsey Haser and Caitlyn Martell all added two hits for SU.
 
Dani Hayward got the win in the circle for the Raiders, striking out six batters and only allowing four hits.
 
Shippensburg will continue its homestand on Tuesday with a non-conference doubleheader against Pitt-Johnstown at 1 p.m.
 
Game 1: SHIP 9, PACE 1 (5 INNINGS)
 
Hayward got right to work in the top of the first, striking out two batters. The Raiders saw their first run of the day in the bottom of the second inning, after double from Bauman that turned to a three-base hit off a Setter error. Haser brought the run in with a sacrifice fly to give SU the first lead.
 
The Raiders added two more runs in the bottom of the third from an RBI double from Ehrlacher and an RBI single from Emilee Sullivan.
 
Pace got on the board in the top of the fourth after an RBI triple to make the score 3-1.
 
SU saw its biggest lead of the day come in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring a total of six runs. With the bases loaded, Cimino hit a single to bring home two runs and increase the lead to 5-1. Brie Wilmot got hit by a pitch to bring in another SU run. Bauman and Haser hit back-to-back RBI singles to make the score 9-1.
 
The Setters recorded two of their four hits in the top of the fifth, but the Raider defense ended the game.
 
Bauman led the offense with two hits, going 2-for-2 at the plate with an RBI single, a double, and drew a walk. Cimino totaled two hits, collecting two RBIs. Chaunda Poulin recorded her first hit as a Raider.
 
Hayward collected five of her six strikeouts in the first three innings and did not allow a hit through the first two.
 
Game 2: PACE 7, SHIP 4
 
Pace flipped the momentum in Game 2, scoring the first run of the game in the top of the second off an RBI double. Ashley Field increased the lead with a double that cleared the bases and made the score 4-0.
 
Bauman answered for the Raiders in the bottom of the second with a solo shot – her second of the season.
 
With the bases loaded, Pace increased its lead with two more runs after two hit by pitches.
 
The Raiders fought back in the bottom of the fifth with a pair of RBI singles from Martell and Cimino to make it 6-3.
 
An RBI single in the top of the sixth put the Setters back up by four, 7-3. SU had two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the sixth, but was unable to cut the deficit.
 
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Cimino delivered her fourth home run of the season, 7-4.
 
Mikayla Fontana got her first career start in the circle for the Raiders, striking out one batter in two innings. Mya Parkinson finished the game for SU, striking out a career-high five batters, giving up just three hits.
