SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University softball team experienced a pair of run-rule games Friday afternoon, splitting its home opener with IUP – winning the first game 9-1 in five innings before falling to IUP in the second game 10-2 in six innings.
Shippensburg (4-2) used 16 hits to plate 11 runs on the day. Eight different Raiders had at least one hit while nine different Raiders scored a run. IUP (5-7) matched SU with 16 hits and 11 runs.
Gianna Cimino went 4-for-7 on the day – hitting a home run, a double, and two singles while totaling three RBIs.
Emilee Sullivan recorded three hits and two RBIs.
Reagan Bauman,
Lindsey Haser and
Rilee Ehrlacher each added two hits on the day.
Dani Hayward got the pitching win in Game 1, striking out six batters and giving up just four hits.
Shippensburg will host No. 24 Pace at
10:30 a.m. tomorrow at Robb Field.
Game 1: SHIP 9, IUP 1
The Raiders saw their first run of the day in the bottom of the second inning after an RBI single from Haser.
Caitlyn Martell continued the rally with a single to second base. Cimino launched her third home run of the season to make the score 5-0.
Hayward recorded three of her six strikeouts in the top of the third to keep the Crimson Hawks off the board.
Sullivan got her second hit of the day with an RBI double to right center to increase the lead to six.
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth, the Raiders took advantage of an IUP error to make the score 7-0.
The lone run for the Crimson Hawks came in the top of the fifth off an RBI single to cut the deficit to six, 7-1.
With a Raider on base,
Emily Lafferty laid down a bunt that turned into an overthrow from the Crimson Hawks to score an SU run.
Martell hit a sacrifice fly to score Lafferty and end the game in five innings, 9-1.
Sullivan led the Raider offense with two hits and an RBI. Six different Raiders each recorded a hit.
Game 2: IUP 10, SHIP 2
The Raiders got on the board early after a double from Cimino and an RBI single from Ehrlacher.
The score remained 1-0 until the top of the third when Delaney Patella hit a two-run home run to give the Crimson Hawks their first lead of the day at 2-1.
IUP saw its lead increase in the top of the fourth, scoring seven runs. The Crimson Hawks collected three doubles, two singles and drew two walks to make the score 9-1.
Bauman and
Brie Wilmot opened the bottom of the fifth with back-to-back singles. Erhlacher was hit by a pitch to load the bases for SU. The Raiders scored after Sullivan got hit by a pitch to cut the deficit to 9-2.
With two outs, IUP scored off an RBI single to increase the lead back to eight. SU was unable to score in the bottom of the sixth, ending the game at 10-2.
Mya Parkinson pitched three innings for the Raiders, recording a career-high two strikeouts.
Madalyn Dyer pitched two innings, recording two strikeouts and giving up four hits.
Maddy Borowski pitched in the top of the fourth, giving up four hits.
Cimino went 3-for-4 at the plate, with a double and two singles. Ehrlacher and Sullivan each recorded an RBI.
