The Shippensburg University softball team split a Tuesday doubleheader at Millersville, winning the opener 10-1 in six innings before dropping Game 2 by a 6-1 margin in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division action at sunny and windy Seaber Stadium.
Shippensburg totaled 18 hits in the doubleheader but 15 of those came in Game 1.
Caitlyn Martell was 5-for-7 on the day, including a 4-for-4 performance in the opener.
Leah Schwalm had three hits overall.
Dani Hayward got the win the circle for the Raiders, recording six strikeouts in a complete-game effort in Game 1.
Shippensburg is back in action at 2 p.m. Friday when it hosts Lock Haven for a doubleheader at Robb Field.
Game 1: SHIP 10, VILLE 1 (6 innings)
Martell led off in the top of the first with a single followed by a single from
Gianna Cimino.
Reagan Bauman drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to give SU the 1-0 lead. A wild pitch scored Schwalm to make it 2-0.
The Marauders answered with a solo home run in the bottom of the first to make it 2-1. With the tying run on first, the Raider defense made back-to-back outs to get out of the first inning.
With two outs in the bottom of the second,
Brie Wilmot drew a walk followed by a single from
Lindsey Haser. Martell delivered an RBI single to make it 3-1.
SU got two runners on base with two outs in the top of the third but was unable to score. Millersville threatened to score in the bottom of the third with two outs, but Hayward worked out of the jam.
Martell recorded her third hit of the day in the top of the fourth, but the Marauder defense worked out of the inning to keep it at 3-1. The Marauders had two runners on in the bottom of the fourth but a double play by the Raider defense ended the inning.
Schwalm hit a leadoff single in the top of the fifth followed by a Millersville error to put two Raiders on base.
Emilee Sullivan recorded a sacrifice bunt to move the runners.
Rilee Ehrlacher drove in a pair of runs with a double down the left field line to make it 5-1.
Sarah Sabocsik drew a walk, followed by Wilmot's third home run of the season to clear the bases, and increase the SU lead to 8-1.
Schwalm and Bauman opened the sixth inning with back-to-back doubles to make it 9-1. Sullivan recorded an RBI single to increase the lead to 10-1.
Ryan Morse came in to pinch hit and recorded the first hit of her Raider career.
Hayward recorded two strikeouts in the bottom of the sixth and the Raider defense got the last out to end the game via the eight-run rule at 10-1.
Hayward pitched a complete game for the Raiders, recording six strikeouts and scattering just four hits.
Martell went 4-for-4 for the Raider offense, recording a season-high four hits. Schwalm, Ehrlacher and Haser each recorded two hits. Ehrlacher added two RBIs. Wilmot recorded a game-high three RBIs. The team recorded 15 hits and collected nine RBIs.
Game 2: VILLE 6, SHIP 1
Martell continued her day with a single to open Game 2. Cimino dropped a sacrifice bunt to move Martell. The Marauders got three straight outs to work out of the inning.
Madalyn Dyer got the start in the circle for SU and recorded back-to-back strikeouts in the first inning.
A hit by pitch and a walk started off the bottom of the second for Millersville. An RBI single put the Marauders in the lead, 1-0. After a fielder's choice play, Millersville scored again to make it 2-0.
Schwalm contributed an RBI-single in the top of the third inning to get the Raiders within one, but Marauder starter Delaney Troxell stranded two runners on base to maintain the lead.
Millersville hit a solo home run in the third to make it 3-1. A two-run double in the fourth made it 5-1, and a bases-loaded walk in the sixth provided the final run.
Dyer pitched three innings and faced two batters in the fourth. She struck out a season-high five batters.
Kaira Zamadics pitched 1.1 innings, while
Mikayla Fontana got the final five outs.
Troxell allowed just three singles and an unearned run en route to the compete-game victory for the Marauders.
