The Shippensburg University lacrosse team dropped a heartbreaker on Saturday at Millersville, falling to the Marauders 10-9 in overtime in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup on a sunny but cool day at the Biemesderfer.
Shippensburg (4-6, 1-4 PSAC East) held Millersville (4-5, 2-3) mostly in check through the first three quarters. The Raiders led 5-1 at halftime and 8-3 with 15 minutes to go, keeping the Marauders scoreless for a 25:59 stretch of play that spanned the first through third quarters.
The hosts then reeled off four goals in the first six minutes of the fourth quarter to get within one and tied the game with 4:51 left in regulation. The six-goal fourth quarter ultimately resulted in overtime.
After both teams had their goalkeepers make stops on free-position shots in overtime, the Marauders capitalized on a turnover with 45 seconds left on the clock to claim the match.
Lexi Koz made it back-to-back games with a hat trick, leading the Raiders on the day in scoring with three goals. Koz also tied with
Ali Pioli for the team lead with three groundballs and added a pair of caused turnovers.
Alexa Bailey opened the scoring with the first goal of the game and finished with two tallies.
Shannon Wood had a three-point day, scoring a goal and contributing two assists.
Olivia Glinski and
Maddie Phommachanh each had a goal and an assist.
Brynn Hauck also scored a goal.
Grace DeMarzio recorded a career-high nine draw controls – she matched Millersville's team total with her work in the circle. DeMarzio also once again led the team in caused turnovers, recording three, to go along with a groundball.
Izzy Sawicki made 10 saves for the Raiders, marking her second double-digit save output of the season. She made two key stops in overtime.
KC O'Neill made nine saves for the Marauders, including four in the fourth quarter and another in overtime. Brianna Gora scored four times for the hosts, while Addison Geary capped off a hat trick with the golden goal after causing the decisive turnover that prefaced it.
Shippensburg is back at home for its next match, a 3 p.m. Wednesday game against nationally-ranked West Chester at Robb Sports Complex.
