SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University lacrosse team went toe-to-toe with No. 11 West Chester for much of the first half but could not slow down the Golden Rams in the final 30 minutes, dropping a 21-9 decision in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division clash at a sunny and warm Robb Sports Complex.

Shippensburg (4-7, 1-5 PSAC East) scored the opening goal just 36 seconds into the contest and proceeded to lead for the first 20 minutes of play, establishing a two-goal lead on four occasions.

West Chester (9-2, 5-1) countered with three straight goals to take a 7-6 lead at the 5:06 mark of the second quarter. SU nearly tied it two minutes later but was denied on a save by Golden Ram goalkeeper Korrigan Sweeney.

With two minutes left in the half, a turnover and a non-releasable yellow card forced the Raiders to play one player down until the intermission. WCU took advantage, scoring twice in a 50-second span to take a 9-6 lead into halftime.

Shippensburg scored the first goal of the third quarter but found the back of the net only two more times the rest of the way. West Chester outscored the Raiders 7-2 in the third quarter and 5-1 in the fourth quarter to take control.

SU finished with an 18-13 advantage in draws and only committed three more turnovers than the Golden Rams, but the Raiders were held to seven less shots on goal. The visitors also converted on all five of their free-position attempts in the second half and had five man-up goals on the day.

Olivia Glinski recorded a hat trick within the opening 10 minutes; her three goals paced the Raiders. It was her second hat trick of the season and the fourth of her career.

Grace DeMarzio led all players with eight draw controls to go along with a caused turnover and a pair of groundballs. She also provided the assist on Brynn Hauck's goal at the start of the third quarter.

Jill Ahlgren doubled her season goal total with a pair of strikes and added four draw controls. Maddie Phommachanh also struck twice and Lexi Koz added a goal.

Ali Pioli had three draw controls and two assists, while Shawn Coombs had a team-high two caused turnovers. Alexa Bailey and Shannon Wood each contributed an assist.

Izzy Sawicki made five saves in 50-plus minutes of action, while Leah Cramer recorded two saves in the fourth quarter. Sawicki also collected five groundballs.

Sweeney, a Golden Ram sophomore who was making her first start of the season, delivered a career-high 12 saves to keep the Raiders at bay. Marissa Herring had five goals to lead all players, while Lila McMahon-Skates had a nine-point day (four goals, five assists). Reigning All-PSAC First Teamer Sydney Wasdick had seven draw controls and scored four times.

Shippensburg is next in action at 1 p.m. Saturday at Bloomsburg.
