RECAP: Lacrosse drops road conference match at Shepherd, 19-15

Phommachanh, Koz each score career-high five goals

The Shippensburg University lacrosse team could not get past home-standing Shepherd on Wednesday afternoon, dropping a 19-15 decision to the Rams in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division clash at Ram Stadium.

Shippensburg (4-5, 1-3 PSAC East) rallied from a three-goal halftime deficit to take a 10-9 lead with 5:15 left in the third quarter after capping off a 5-0 run. The Raiders trailed by just one, 12-11, entering the final 15 minutes, but the Rams reeled off six goals in a nine-minute span of the fourth quarter to pull away.

Shepherd (2-6, 1-3) totaled 33 shots on goal to Shippensburg's 29 – both teams made 14 saves. Izzy Sawicki and Leah Cramer split time for the Raiders while Bailey Terry patrolled the cage for the hosts.

A primary difference in the contest was Shepherd's success in the center circle. The Rams recorded a 27-9 advantage in draw controls, securing 21 of the first 25 draws in the contest.

Shepherd's Grace Lyon finished with 20 draw controls, which is the second-most recorded in a NCAA Division II game this season. Lyon, who entered Wednesday as the PSAC's draw controls per game leader, also scored a game-high six goals to go along with an assist, three groundballs and two caused turnovers.

Shippensburg received standout performances on the offensive end from Maddie Phommachanh  and Lexi Koz, each of whom scored a career-high five goals.

Phommachanh also led the Raiders with a career-high five groundballs to go along with two draw controls and two caused turnovers. Her five-goal game resulted in her fourth hat trick of the season and the 10th of her career.

Koz entered with just three goals through five career games and had never scored more than once in a contest. She converted all five of her shots on goal into tallies on Wednesday, and each of her goals were scored in the second half.

Shannon Wood matched her career high with four goals – equaling her previous best single-game effort from earlier this season at Frostburg State. Wood added an assist and a draw control.

Brynn Hauck also found the back of the net; in addition to her goal, she contributed a team-high three assists.

Olivia Glinski and Ali Pioli each contributed two assists; the duo also combined for seven groundballs. Pioli added two draw controls. Alexa Bailey and Abby Schwartz-Mitchell each added an assist.

Grace DeMarzio led Shippensburg with three caused turnovers and added three groundballs. Shawn Coombs also collected multiple groundballs.

The Raiders committed a season-low 12 turnovers but could not slow down the Shepherd attack. In addition to Lyon's seven-point effort, Hadley Robertson scored five goals while Grace Meyer and Rebekah Forney each scored twice. Eight different Rams finished with at least one goal.

Shippensburg remains on the road when it travels to Millersville on Saturday for a 1 p.m. match against the Marauders at the Biemesderfer.
