RECAP: Softball sweeps conference opener against No. 25 East Stroudsburg


SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University softball team opened Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division play Friday afternoon by taking both games of a doubleheader against No. 25 East Stroudsburg, winning Game 1, 8-3, and Game 2, 6-4, on a windy afternoon at Robb Field.
 
Shippensburg (12-4, 2-0 PSAC East) totaled 24 hits and plated 14 runs on the day. East Stroudsburg (12-8, 0-2) recorded 18 hits on the day.
 
Emilee Sullivan, Gianna Cimino and Leah Schwalm led the Raider offense with four hits apiece.  
 
Cimino launched her fifth home run of the season, added three singles and recorded an RBI. Schwalm added two RBIs from four singles.
 
Sullivan went 4-for-4 in Game 1, recording an RBI, for the first four-hit game of her career.
 
Reagan Bauman, Caitlyn Martell and Sarah Sabocsik totaled three hits on the day. Bauman recorded three RBIs. Martell added three singles and two RBIs. Sabocsik went 3-for-5 on the day, recording a triple and drawing two walks.
 
Dani Hayward and Madalyn Dyer got the wins in the circle for the Raiders. Hayward struck out seven batters, allowing ten hits. Dyer allowed just two hits in relief in game two.
 
Shippensburg will remain at home on Saturday and continue PSAC East play with a doubleheader against Bloomsburg starting at 1 p.m. 
 
Game 1: SHIP 8, ESU 3
 
Hayward got right to work in the first inning, recording three of her seven strikeouts. Martell opened the bottom of the first with a walk. Cimino laid down a sacrifice bunt, on which Martell took third base and then scored after a Warrior error to put SU on the board first.
 
Brie Wilmot increased the SU lead in the bottom of the second after a leadoff home run to make the score 2-0.
 
The Warriors saw their first run of the day in the top of the third after a leadoff triple and an RBI single to cut the deficit to one.
 
With two Raiders on base, Lindsey Haser laid down a sacrifice bunt that was followed with an RBI single from Martell, scoring both runners to make it 4-1.
 
ESU answered in the top of the fifth with a trio of doubles to cut the deficit back to one, 4-3.
 
Cimino hit a leadoff, first pitch home run to start the bottom of the sixth, 5-3. With two outs and a runner on base, Rilee Ehrlacher smashed her second home run of the season to make it 7-3. Sabocsik hit a triple followed by an RBI single from Sullivan to put SU up by five, 8-3.
 
The Warriors opened the top of the seventh with back-to-back singles, but a double play from the Raider defense and a Hayward strikeout ended the game.
 
Hayward pitched a seven-inning complete game for the Raiders, recording seven strikeouts and allowing ten hits.
 
Sullivan went 4-for-4, recording four singles and an RBI. Cimino and Sabocsik each added two hits. Sabocsik went 2-of-2, recording a triple and a single and drew two walks. Eight different Raiders recorded a hit in Game 1.
 
Five of Shippensburg's eight runs were against ESU pitcher Sarah Davenport, a reigning First Team All-American who was the PSAC Eastern Division and Atlantic Region Pitcher of the Year last season. Davenport pitched into the sixth inning, allowing five runs (four earned) while striking out just one.
 
Game 2: SHIP 6, ESU 4
 
ESU was the first on the board in Game 2 after a home run in the top of the third by the No. 9 batter, Maddy Pritchard.
 
The Raiders responded in the bottom of the third with a two-out rally. SU scored three runs off an RBI single from Schwalm and a two-RBI single from Bauman.
 
The Warriors opened the top of the fourth with back-to-back singles, followed by another single to score both runners and tie the game at three. ESU regained the lead off another RBI-single to make it 4-3.
 
With a light rain now falling, Schwalm added another RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at four. Bauman followed with an RBI single to retake the lead at 5-4.
 
Sabocsik opened the bottom of the sixth with a single. Martell singled to score Sabocsik and make it 6-4.
 
ESU had one runner on base before the Raider defense ended the game with a double play.
 
Mikayla Fontana started in the circle for the Raiders, pitching three innings and allowing six hits. Dyer earned the pitching win for SU, pitching three innings and allowing just two hits.
 
Schwalm went 3-for-4, recording three singles and two RBIs. Martell, Cimino and Bauman each added two hits. Bauman totaled three RBIs off a pair of singles.
